Children, Teens and Beyond Symposium

 Symposium Flyer 2015 (1)

Some of the speakers and panelists at the 4-hour Free Children, Teens & Beyond Symposium and Fair at the Holiday Inn in Mount Kisco, NY on Saturday, October 17th from 9 am to 1 pm include:

Heidi Bonorato of Giving Retriever, LLC runs goal-based programs for children with physical, social, emotional, cognitive and communicative functioning, and development challenges using therapy dogs. As the children learn to train the dog, their therapy is derived from their interactions with the dog. It is magical because they don’t perceive it as “therapy”, and it is effective in addressing issues in the moment with a non-judgmental partner (the dog!). Developing empathy, patience, compassion, frustration tolerance, accountability and team work are some of the skills that are developed. Below are a boy and a Giving Retriever puppy pictured sharing some time together.

“When other therapies failed, my son has had great success with this therapy because he loves working with the dogs.” –E.F

Sensory Stepping Stones The way we process information and react or respond to it depends on how our brain has developed. If the foundation of brain development at each stage was not fully complete, gaps in the way we process information and react to our environment appear. This may result in us having to work harder to compensate for the insufficiencies, or just give up.

“It may sound as if it is a sensory integration program, but it is actually a neurologic re-training program. For our son, it was an intervention; we are no longer in a continual “crisis mode”, he is able to be more present, less reactive and is happier.” – a parent http://www.sensorysteppingstones.com/
