How to Style Thinning Hair

Thinning hair can be upsetting at any age. In fact, nearly 1/3 of women—30 million Americans—will experience hair loss. Thinning hair and hair loss happens when something interrupts the hair growth cycle. For women, there are a number of reasons that lead to hair loss including: stress, genetics, menopause, medical supplements and nutrient deficiencies. While we cannot always control what happens to our hair, there are several ways to enhance and embrace our look and bring out our natural beauty, both on the inside and outside! If you are struggling with thinning hair and are looking for a quick solution, check out some of the tips below.

Embrace A New, Bold Look

Volume-boosting haircuts are an effortless way to make thinning hair look fuller and to hide hair loss areas. Bob cuts can make hair look flat, but an asymmetrical bob that is parted to one side will give the illusion of more volume while drawing attention to lower facial features. Angled bobs, faux bobs, long, blunt bangs, pixie cuts, are also great ways to help distract from thinning hair.

Add Dimension with Color

When your hair is one color, the thinning areas are more noticeable, especially if you have darker hair and a fair complexion. Book a consultation and talk to your stylist about adding highlights or lowlights to your hair. Your stylist will help pick the right color that best matches your natural hair color, complexion and facial features—your stylist may go about two shades lighter than your natural hair. Adding color, will not only add dimension, but will visually help reduce the appearance of your thinning spots and scalp.

Switch Up Your Part

Sounds easy enough? And guess what, it doesn’t cost you a thing! In fact, changing the way you part your hair is essential for a healthy scalp. Wearing your hair in the same part can eventually lead to breakage due to an uneven distribution of weight with your hair. Switching your part can help hide stubborn thinning spots and create more volume instantly.

Invest in Extensions

Clip in hair extensions are a quick and easy hack to “fake” voluminous hair. Hair extensions come in various lengths and widths. Extensions are not used to cover up your existing hair in most cases. Rather, they are adding to the hair you already have. If you have fine hair, thinning areas, or your hair just does not offer the volume that you desire, these extensions can be one of the best investments you make. Clip in extensions are safe to use for a night out or special event. Some people believe that extensions will damage their hair. This is also not true. Again, they must be applied by a professional with experience in extensions. If you do not apply them properly, care for them, or allow them to get tangled, they will damage your hair, though. You’ll want to take care of your extensions the same way you take care of your natural hair.

Utilize Rollers

It is no secret many women over style and over heat their hair with blow dryers, straighteners, hot curlers and curling irons. Higher temperature levels and heat that is placed on the surface for a prolonged length of time causes damage. This is because heat itself burns through the surface of the hair and can damage it at the cellular level. Instead of grabbing your curling iron after you blow dry your hair, try using Velcro rollers to create bouncy, fuller hair. Rollers come in all shapes and sizes to accommodate for various hair lengths. After you blow your hair dry, wrap the roller around sections of your hair and roll away from your face. Let your style set and cool for about 10-15 minutes before unrolling.

Create an Edgy Up Do

Styles such as wrapped ponytails are not only sleek and trendy, but can also give the illusion of thicker hair. Jagged side parts with waves; donut topknots, deep side parts and braids can also transform your hair by adding more dimensions while keeping your look stylish. Top off your look with a sparkly headband or hair clip!
