Women’s History Month Stories | Ellen’s Stardust Diner in Times Square

As a quintessential New Yorker and hospitality icon, Ellen Hart-Sturm has been welcoming guests from all over the globe to her iconic diner – home of the original world-famous singing waitstaff – for over 30 years.

Located in the heart of Times Square, the retro 1950’s themed eatery features historic New York memorabilia adorned throughout the space, has welcomed many NYC Mayors and other elected officials as their go-to over the years has been the backdrop of major pop culture, and TV, and launched several “Starduster” singers who have started their career who has gone onto Broadway, Off-Broadway, and even American Idol.

Open 365 days a year from 7 am to midnight daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Ellen’s Stardust Diner features a classic retro diner-themed menu with signature items including Stardust Nachos, Hot Diggity Dogs, Ruby Reuben Sandwich, Yankee Doodle Burger topped with mac n’ cheese, Signature Shakes and more.

For private parties and corporate events, Ellen’s Stardust Diner is available, as well as the downstairs legendary Iridium Jazz Club.

Ellen is also a former Miss Subway (spring 1959), and the promotion served as the inspiration for Miss Turnstile in the classic NYC musical On the Town, placed her picture on subway trains around the city, and opened the doors for a singing, acting, and modeling career. She has also run the NYC Marathon and sometimes can be found making singing cameos at the diner too!
