A suitcase can be full and still give you that familiar feeling: nothing to wear. A travel capsule wardrobe is my answer to the pile of just-in-case clothes. Not a whole new wardrobe. A small group of pieces that actually get along.
The point is to spend less time getting dressed and more time enjoying where you went. Dinner, a walk, another coffee. Preferably without excavating the bottom of your bag.

Start with the plans, not the shopping
Write down what the trip really includes. Walking around town? A beach? A dinner where you want to dress up? A work meeting? Check the forecast, too. A packing list for a city weekend should not look like a packing list for a week by the water.
Then choose a base color you already wear. Black, navy, cream or brown all work. Add one or two colors you like with it. This is less about rules and more about avoiding a suitcase full of separate outfits that cannot talk to each other.
A starting point, not a magic number
For a week with laundry available, try four tops, three bottoms, a dress, a light sweater and a jacket. Add two pairs of shoes: one for walking and one that works for dinner. Underwear, sleepwear and any activity-specific clothes come next.
Lay it all out before it goes in the bag. Every top should work with at least two bottoms. The dress should work with your dinner shoes and a layer. If something needs its own shoes, bag and supporting cast, it may be asking too much of a carry-on.
Adjust the count to the weather, activities and laundry plan. Two weeks without laundry needs a different plan. And fitting in a carry-on still depends on the bag and the airline's current size and weight limits.
The shoes have veto power
Beautiful shoes that hurt after twenty minutes are not travel shoes. Pack a walking pair you already know is comfortable. Break them in before the trip, not on the first day of sightseeing.
For dinner, a loafer, a flat or a low heel can change the feeling of the same trousers and top. Choose for the actual destination. Cobblestones and a delicate heel are not always friends.
Make room for one fun thing
Packing light does not mean dressing like you have given up. A printed scarf, a favorite pair of earrings or a top with a little personality can do a lot with the same simple pieces.
Use the outfit ideas in my Fall Style Edit as inspiration, not a requirement to buy eight new things. A jacket, stripes and trousers can work hard at home and away.
The final check
Try on the combinations. Sit down in the trousers. Walk in the shoes. Check the care labels before assuming something will survive a sink wash. Put the clothes that need ironing back if the trip does not have room for that project.
A good travel capsule wardrobe makes getting dressed easier. It does not deserve to become another job before vacation.
