Change the Length of a Clip

If you have a clip that you really want to use, but you don’t need the start or end of it, it’s easy to change where it begins or ends. To make a clip shorter, you want to tap on the clip. It will then become outlined in yellow.

Hold down on the thick yellow bar at the start of the clip and drag it in to the point where you want the clip to start. If you want to shorten the ending, tap again and drag inward from the end of the clip.

Edit the Audio of a Clip

In iMovie, there’s an option called Detach. When you select this, the audio and video are no longer linked. Many amateur video editors like to have the two pieces connected. If you want to replace audio or do voice over, then it will benefit you to use the Detach option.

By using Detach, you can also edit the audio by dragging its edges in to make it shorter. You can also use the Split option to cut certain pieces out. There’s even a Background option, which will lower the volume so that you can add in new audio while keeping the ambiance of the original audio.

Adding Fast or Slow Motion

Looking to add some dramatic flair to your motion picture? Then you should consider slowing down or speeding up certain clips.

Look for the icon on the iMovie screen that looks like a car speedometer. This will allow you to speed up or slow down your video clips.

You will then notice an area below the clip that’s highlighted in yellow. Drag the end and start points of where you want the clip to slow down or speed up. When the area of the video that you want to change is highlighted, you can then slide the controller in the direction of the hare (fast) icon or the tortoise (slow) icon.

If you notice that things are getting a bit messy or you’re not happy with the results, you can always tap the Reset button in order to put things back to the way they were before.

Throw In Some Music

Now that you’re film is starting to take shape, you may want to replace the current audio tracks with some cinematic music. Apple already has a library of music that is free of any copyright that you can use. If you want to try to compose something yourself, you can always make your own music in the Garageband app.

With your movie now taking shape, you might want to replace the standard audio with some music. Apple has a library of rights-free music you can use, or you could compose something yourself in Garageband.

If you want, you can use some popular music that you find online. But if you try to upload to YouTube or another video-sharing website, it will likely be taken down due to certain terms violations.

If you want to add some background music, tap on the + icon. Then, select the Audio option. Now, you can select from a bunch of different sound effects or cheese from the Theme music that comes default in iMovie.

You can also use any music that’s in your Apple Music application.
