Do you want to improve your productivity and make multi-tasking a breeze? If you’ve never considered using the split screen functionality on your computer, then you’re missing out. Split screen enables you to skip the annoying process of continually opening and closing windows to get to the work you need.

Instead, you’ll have everything you’re working on, reading, or viewing up on your monitor at the same time.

Read on to learn all about the benefits of using a split computer screen and how to set it up quickly on your own computer!

Benefits of Using a Split Computer Screen

If you’ve ever wondered why people work with multiple monitors or split computer screens, we’re here to explain why. Here are some benefits and applications that you may not have considered before.

1. Productivity

If you find yourself frequently switching between different programs, then using a split screen will drastically increase your productivity. This is because instead of pausing your work to bring up another window, you simply have to switch your gaze to the other screen.

2. Quick Response

A split computer screen is even better for people in customer service environments or who need to respond quickly to work emails. You can use one screen in order to communicate with coworkers and clients and another as your “working” screen for research.

3. Inexpensive

Unlike the expense it takes to set up multiple monitors, setting up a single monitor with split screen oftentimes doesn’t take any extra money at all. It’s typically a simple, native process that becomes easier with practice.

4. Multitasking On-the-Go

If you have multiple monitors for your main setup but find there are times you work outside your home or office, then using split screen on a laptop or tablet is a great option. This enables you to enjoy the same multitasking potential.

How to Split Your Computer Screen

Now that you know some of the benefits of using split screen on your computer, here’s a brief guide on how to get it working. Along with Windows 10, this process also works on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.

Windows Snap Assist

If you have Windows 10, you’ll find that using split screen on your computer is easy. All you need to do is go to Start, Settings, System, and then Multitasking to enable it. However, it should be enabled by default.

Once you’re sure it’s enabled, open up two or more windows or applications that you’re planning on using. Drag one window to the left side of your screen until you can’t go any further until it snaps into place once you release the mouse. It should fill the left side of the screen or the left corner.

Next, select another window and do the same thing. This time you’ll want to drag it to the right. Once they’re beside each other, you can also drag the dividing line between them left or right. This is handy if you want one screen to be larger than another.

Don’t want to use your mouse? You can also use Snap Assist by pressing the Windows key along with the left or right directional arrows.

Split Screen With Multiple Windows

If you have more than two windows that you want to split along with a large monitor, it’s possible to use split screen with multiple windows.

You’ll first want to choose the program you want to start with. Drag the window by the title bar to the upper right of the screen–you’ll see an outline of where it will go. Release the mouse button and the window will snap into place.

Choose the next window you’ll want open and drag it in the same way. This time, you’ll drag it below the open window at the bottom right. It will snap into place as well.

At this point, on the left side of your screen, you’ll see all of the other open windows you can use with split screen. Click on the one you want open and it will automatically snap to the left side.

If you want to use four windows instead of three, drag this left one to the upper left corner where it will snap into place. Then you can choose which window you’ll want to open in the bottom left.

Unsnapping a Window

Of course, you probably won’t want to work with multiple windows open every time you turn on the computer. Thankfully, unsnapping is as easy as snapping them. Simply click on a blank space in the “title” section of a window and drag it away from the corner or area it’s snapped to.

The window will easily unsnap from that area, leaving you free to close or minimize it.

Speeding Up Your Workflow With Split Screen

Using split screen on your Windows or Mac computer is a straightforward process. If you find yourself continually opening and closing windows in order to reference files, read emails, or simply watch a video for a mental break, then split screen may be for you.

Remember to ensure it’s enabled by navigating to Settings and then to the Multitasking menu. Feel free to disable this functionality as well if you find yourself accidentally snapping windows to corners of your screen during the day!
