AN EVENING AT THE THEATER: The Schoolhouse Theater (in Croton Falls, a pretty 40-minute drive or train from the city)
“Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Secret Journey.” This one-woman play, adapted from a highly praised novel by Rhoda Lerman, follows Mrs. Roosevelt from 1918 to 1922. These were pivotal years for her, showing how she transformed herself from an ugly duckling with an unfaithful husband to a champion of peace and human rights. It’s an 80-minute monologue, and a demanding one; the actress also plays both sides of conversations with Bernard Baruch, Franklin Roosevelt, and her bodyguard. Ginger Grace is younger and vastly more attractive than Mrs. Roosevelt, but she’s absolutely convincing. And mesmerizing. She skipped for joy at the standing ovation; she earned it. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8, with a Sunday matinee at 3. Closes April 29. For information and tickets, click here.
