Unhappiness can’t be solved by tweaking problematic situations, says Ph.D. psychologist Gail Brenner, author of The End of Self Help: Discovering Peace and Happiness Right at the Heart of Your Messy, Scary Brilliant Life.
When you focus on external circumstances such as your job, your relationships and your belongings in the belief that they define you…this is when unhappiness comes to surface.
The real key to happiness and peace,
lies in simply being aware of any given moment as it unfolds.
To achieve this, Gail suggests three simple steps:
- Recognize the thoughts and feelings that are bringing you unhappiness.
- Intentionally shift your attention away from them and from the distracting stories you’re telling yourself about dilemmas and their solutions.
- Let your attention rest instead on your awareness of what you are experiencing emotionally and physically in that instant.
