The ballet flat is not going anywhere, but this fall I am making room for its preppier cousin. Boat shoes have the same throw-on ease, with a little more structure and a lot more personality. Cosmopolitan UK singled out Zara’s glossy black Leather Deck Loafers in its August trend story. I see the appeal: black leather takes the shoe out of yacht-club territory and straight into the closet I actually use.

My test for a trend shoe is simple: can I wear it with jeans, a sweater and a blazer, then walk through Bedford without thinking about my feet? A lower-profile pair is an easy yes with straight-leg jeans or tailored trousers. If you like a chunkier sole, let it be the one playful piece and keep everything else quiet.
The Zara pair that started the conversation
Zara’s black Leather Deck Loafers have the patent shine that makes this trend feel new. I would wear them with dark denim and an ivory knit, or with a midi skirt and a soft cardigan. See the Cosmopolitan UK story

Four pairs I would actually wear
Sperry Keely Boat Shoe | black leather
The sharper, city-ready option. The black-on-black upper and sturdier sole give it more weight than a ballet flat without making the rest of the outfit work harder. I would start with ankle-length black trousers and a white shirt.
Sperry Slim Boat Shoe | tan
For the woman who wants the boat-shoe shape without a bulky sole. Tan suede and a slim profile play nicely with jeans, camel, navy and cream. This is the easy weekend pair.
Sebago Portland Waxed Woman | brown honey
The true classic: handsewn waxed leather, contrast stitching and a darker brown tone. I would wear it with a striped knit and straight-leg denim, then add a trench when it cools down.
Vince Marin suede boat shoe | blue ink
The dressed-up version. Navy suede and a low, clean shape make this closer to a polished flat. Try it with cream trousers and a soft navy jacket for lunch or a casual dinner.
My rule: choose the pair you would wear twice this week, not the pair that looks best in a trend report. Patent if you want polish, soft suede if you want quiet, and a classic brown leather pair if you want something that will still make sense next year.
