Swapping Your Skincare for Fall: What Changes After 50

The first crisp morning arrives, I put on a sweater, and my face immediately files a complaint. After 50, the seasonal change can show up as tightness, flaking and irritation before we have even turned on the heat.

You do not need to replace every bottle. Fall skincare is mostly about dialing down irritation and dialing up barrier support.

Switch the cleanser first

If your foaming cleanser leaves your skin squeaky, it is doing too much. Move to a gentle cream, lotion or oil cleanser without strong fragrance. Cleanse with lukewarm water. Hot water feels wonderful and can make dry skin feel worse.

Use a richer moisturizer

Look for a mix of humectants, emollients and occlusives. In normal language: ingredients that attract water, smooth the spaces between skin cells and help keep moisture from escaping. Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, squalane and petrolatum are useful names to know.

A richer cream at night may be enough. If your cheeks are especially dry, press a tiny amount of petrolatum or balm over moisturizer on those areas. You do not need to glaze your entire face like a doughnut.

Reconsider the active-ingredient pileup

Retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C can all have a place. Using all of them aggressively because summer is over is not a plan. If your skin is irritated, reduce frequency and add products back one at a time. Prescription retinoid users should ask their dermatologist before changing the routine.

Keep the sunscreen

The sun did not retire on Labor Day. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin, especially if you use a retinoid or exfoliating acid. UVA travels through clouds and windows, including the very large windshield between you and every Westchester errand.

Do not forget lips, hands and neck

Keep lip balm where you will use it: bedside, handbag, car. Apply hand cream after washing and before bed. Bring moisturizer and sunscreen down the neck and onto the chest unless a product label says otherwise.

My simple fall routine

**Morning:** Rinse or gentle cleanse, antioxidant if tolerated, moisturizer, SPF.

**Night:** Gentle cleanse, treatment on its scheduled nights, richer moisturizer.

**Once a week:** Check how your skin feels before adding anything “intensive.”

See a board-certified dermatologist for persistent redness, itching, cracking, bleeding or a rash that does not improve. A seasonal tweak should make skin calmer. If it turns your bathroom into a chemistry lab and your face into a warning light, simplify.

The glamorous truth is that consistency wins. A gentle cleanser, a good cream and sunscreen will never have the excitement of a gold jar with a waiting list, but your skin barrier has excellent taste.
