Stargirl: Your New Favorite TV Binge

Are you sick of the shows on your Netflix queue? Do you find yourself getting stuck watching repeats of the same series? Are you looking for something refreshing and funny? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it’s time to check out DC’s new series, Stargirl.

What’s the Premise?

Stargirl, which is executive produced by Geoff Johns, centers around a character named Courtney Whitmore. Although Courtney is destined to become Stargirl, the inheritor of Starman’s Cosmic Staff and a leading member of the Justice Society of America, she’s just an average teenager when the show starts. Her mother, Barbara Whitmore, has just married Pat Dugan, and the two want to live in Nebraska instead of Los Angeles. That means Courtney has to adjust to life in a new state with a stepfather and his son, Mike. She’s also never been to a traditional school before, having been homeschooled until this year, but now it’s time for her to try public school.

These factors combine to give Courtney one of the worst first days of school possible.

Although her story begins ordinarily, Courtney soon realizes that her life is anything but boring. As she rummages through her basement, she finds a strange staff that gives her incredible powers. After using the staff to get revenge on a bully, her stepfather confronts her about using the superhero tool. He reveals his identity as Stripesy, Starman’s former sidekick. Ten years previously, the JSA was flourishing but then they were attacked by the Injustice Society of America (ISA). The ISA won and most of the JSA’s heroes died, including Starman. While Stripesy escaped with his life and the charge to pass on the Cosmic Staff to a new hero who can reunite the JSA. In the present, however, he just wants to be an ordinary father. The staff sets events in motion that neither Courtney nor her stepfather can control, and soon they’re drawn into the struggle, leading a young group of superheroes.
