Siegel Bros. Marketplace and Siegel Bros. Wine & Spirits
Prepares to Open in Mount Kisco, NY
The Perfect Pairing of Food and Wine
Wine & Spirits Shop to Open in Mid-November – Marketplace to Follow in Mid-December
This is Siegel Bros. Marketplace, a fourth generation owned and operated specialty food market which picks up where Abram Siegel left off in 1912 when he first opened his kosher butcher shop in Woodbine, NJ upon fleeing Russia. The first incarnation was called Siegel’s Meats, Poultry and Livestock, a true butcher shop, processing meat and chicken in the adjacent slaughterhouse – “craft butchery” at its finest.
Today the family tradition lives on with Abram’s grandson Bruce Nevins, and his great grandchildren Jeremy, Doug and Chef David Nevins, continuing what their family patriarch created a century ago, this time in the form of Siegel Bros. Marketplace and its counterpart, Siegel Bros. Wine & Spirits set to open next month in the charming New York City suburb of Mount Kisco, NY.
Stemming from prominent pedigree within the food and wine world, the Nevins brothers were strongly influenced by their father Bruce Nevins, a renowned wine importer, marketer and retail giant who made a name for himself during his 14 years as the owner of the highly successful Hay Day Wine Shop in Ridgefield, CT. Both Doug and Jeremy developed a passion for wine and would go on to study the craft with renowned winemakers and hospitality professionals, before operating the family’s previous retail stores; Grand Harvest Wines located in New York’s Grand Central Terminal and the original Wine Wise in Greenwich, CT. While immersing themselves within the wine industry, a natural progression towards the culinary world would take shape, resulting in a partnership with neighboring Grand Central Market and Whole Foods, promoting the marriage of food and wine, which would ultimately become the foundation for Siegel Bros. Marketplace and Siegel Bros. Wine & Spirits.
Meanwhile brother David pursued his life-long ambition in cooking, graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in 1997. Boston bound, and initially a Todd English recruit within his Figs and Olives restaurants, David would earn his Chef title while at Boston’s leading seafood restaurant, Neptune Oyster, where he was recognized as Boston Magazine’s top young upcoming chefs in the country (2004). In 2008 Chef David joined his family in openingOsetra Oyster Bar and Fish House in trendy South Norwalk, CT, which was hailed by Zagat as the “best seafood restaurant in Connecticut”. Most recently, Chef David prepared his signature New England fare at the Grey Lady on Nantucket.
Adding to this family affair is an integral part of Siegel Bros. operations, seasoned hospitality industry professional EdCosta. With over 30 years of food and beverage management experience in top hotels and restaurants throughout the country including; The London Hotel in New York and West Hollywood; New York’s Waldorf Astoria; as well as the Hilton Downtown Boston Hotel and The Boston Harbor Hotel, Ed’s experience in the food and wine industries brings unparalleled expertise and customer service to Siegel Bros.
Don Myers brings over two decades of experience in the meat and fish industries to Siegel Bros. Marketplace. Don ran the butcher and charcuterie department in the heavily traffickedGrand Central Market, as well as Whole Foods. He went on to learn the intricacies of the seafood industry, spending 2 years with a successful wholesaler. Prior to joining the Siegel Bros. team, Don took his combined expertise in meat and seafood to Mrs. Greens organic food market in Westchester and Long Island, revamping their meat and seafood department from pre-packaged to fresh, thus elevating the quality and freshness of the food, and the customer service.
Taking its cues from an era gone by, Siegel Bros. Market embraces their real food mantra of providing humanely and sustainably raised animals that are grass and grain fed and raised without hormones or antibiotics, therefore providing their customers with the best tasting, most tender, and healthiest meat and poultry possible. Sourced from Hudson Valley farms and surrounding Connecticut and New York livestock ranchers, Siegel Bros’.seasoned butchers will cut, trim and de-bone to order, providing the personal service that one very rarely experiences nowadays.
These same practices are applied to the fish department; sustainably raised farmed products and seasonal fresh wild caught fish are sourced from the most reputable seafood suppliers from here and abroad, guaranteeing the best products in the market today are being offered. Customers can look forward to MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified sustainable options such as swordfish, sushi-grade tuna, Chilean sea bass, cod, scallops, mussels, oysters, prawns, lobster, crabs, halibut, and more.
Siegel Bros. features an expansive cheese counter and charcuterie selection featuring imported and domestic cheeses cut straight from the wheel, as well as cured, smoked and dried meats such as salumi, prosciutto, and braciola. All cheeses and charcuterie are well researched, tasted, and sourced from the most reputable cheese mongers around the world. A select line of olive oils, accoutrements and seasonal items will also be available.
The Siegel Bros. food experience is further enhanced by a robust, from scratch, prepared foods section spearheaded by Executive Chef David Nevins in their on-site kitchen. In keeping with the practices and principals of the quality food items found at Siegel Bros. Marketplace, a seasonal and revolving selection of land and sea, vegetarian and gluten-free, comforting and healthful dishes will be offered, in addition to favorites and kitchen staples that will be available daily.
