Pretty tiles, useful extras and a few gifts for the friend who would rather play another hand than go home.
There is a fine line between having a hobby and giving it its own accessories department. Mahj has clearly crossed it. The tiles are prettier, the bags have personalities, and apparently even the pillows have opinions about housework. The buzz goes well beyond our tables: as AAA reports, Yelp named mahjong a 2026 trend, with searches on its site up 4,467% from September 2024 to August 2025 and searches for lessons up 819%. That’s search interest, not a head count. And the pretty tiles are part of the pull: Dr. Annelise Heinz, a University of Oregon historian and author of Mahjong: A Chinese Game and the Making of Modern American Culture, calls them “the epitome of analog or sensory satisfaction.”
I pulled together a little mahj edit: one show-off tile set, a few useful upgrades, and gifts that work whether your friend hosts every week or just likes a good excuse to get everyone around the table. You do not need the whole list. Pick the thing her setup is missing, or the thing that will make her laugh. If you are still shopping for the host in your life, my fall hostess gifts under $50 are a good place to start, and if your table is still arguing about the rules, I have thoughts on the hot wall debate.

1. The tiles worth showing off
CHARLESTON MAHJONG CLUB | The Country Club Edition | $400
Pink, green and a little country-club wit. Charleston Mahjong Club works tennis, golf and pickleball into this tile set, so it feels right at home in a Westchester game room. This is the big-ticket pick for someone who already knows mahj is her thing.
Tiles only, not a complete starter kit. The maker recommends 19-20-inch racks for these larger tiles. Do not pair them with the shorter racks below.
2. A prettier place to play
ELYSE BREANNE DESIGN | Mahjong Mat | $75
The floral border does the decorating for you. This Elyse Breanne Design mat is a lovely way to make a plain table feel ready for company without buying an entirely new setup.
33 x 33 inches; neoprene with non-slip backing. Tiles are not included.
3. A little color in your rack
OH MY MAHJONG – Multicolor Acrylic Rack & Pusher Set | $60
Pink, blue, yellow and green acrylic racks make it easy to give everyone a color. A cheerful upgrade for a set you already love, and a useful gift that does not require knowing someone’s entire wish list.
Four racks with attached pushers; 18.5-inch stack length. For compatible standard-size tiles, not the larger Country Club tiles above.
4. The bag that means business
WEEZIE TOWELS | Mahjong Bag | From $93
If your mahj gear travels, the bag matters. Weezie’s soft patterned tote makes the trip from your house to game night considerably prettier. I like this as a gift for the friend who always arrives prepared.
Base price is without embroidery; embroidery and appliqué cost extra.
5. The hostess add-on
MAISONETTE | Mahjong Party Plates | $14 listed
Pretty paper plates are the low-commitment way into the theme. These pastel, mahj-inspired designs make snacks look like part of the evening rather than something you remembered five minutes before everyone arrives.
6. For the friend who hosts
HOTEL LOBBY CANDLE | Mahjong Candle | $58 regular price
A mahjong-themed candle is a lovely thank-you when someone else is supplying the table, the tiles and the patience. The lavender vessel is pretty enough to leave out after game night.
Keep a lit candle safely away from sleeves, bags and playing pieces.
7. The off-duty mahj uniform
UNFORTUNATE PORTRAIT | Short Sleeve Crew Neck T-shirt | $78
Unfortunate Portrait’s little Mahjong Club drawing gives a white tee a sense of humor. Wear it with jeans and a cardigan. No elaborate outfit required, which is rather the point of getting together at someone’s kitchen table.
8. A tiny declaration
THEO GRACE | Mahjong Queen Name Necklace | $85
The Mahjong Queen necklace is for the friend who takes her title seriously. Small enough to layer, playful enough to make a good gift, and considerably easier to wrap than a full set of tiles.
9. The game-room punch line
FURBISH STUDIO | Mahjong Needlepoint Pillow | $98
“Mahjong forever, housework never.” Furbish has put the priorities in writing, and honestly, the pillow says enough on its own. This is the fun gift for someone whose mahj corner already has everything.
Delivery timing can vary, so check it before you promise this as a gift.
My pick: start with the piece you will use, then add the ridiculous pillow. It has earned its place.
