These are Marley’s tips for decorating on a dime for the upcoming holiday season.
Supply chain issues, inflation, and gas price surges can leave you feeling kind of Grinchy, but no need when you can still trick out the tree for a lot less with a little imagination and a good old-fashioned scavenger hunt.
- Go Glitter or Go Home: No question traditional red and green are unnecessary this year. We saw a Halloween full of pastel pumpkins and the holidays seem no less tolerant of alternative color choices. Brighter is better this year with amplified color options like neon retro signs so use it as the perfect excuse to take your basic ornaments and decor and give them a solid coat of glitter for a dust-up. Whether you go the Modge Podge or aerosol glue route, head to your local dollar store for a pile of glitter and get glamming. See, you’re using what you’ve already got and these days glue and glitter haven’t (yet) been affected by the supply chain sitch.
- Glass Is Good:One of the easiest ways to decorate on a budget is to stick with metallics, clear glass, and candles. Stock up on cylindrical vases from your favorite thrift shop in all kinds of heights and widths and fill them with last year’s ornaments (and maybe forgo the tree altogether this year). Imagine those receptacles, some full of ornaments, some with solo candles and others full of water, a floating candle, and a few cranberries. Next, you’re done!
- Driftwood Isn’t Only for The Dunes: Depending on where you live, pinecones or acorns often abound and they look amazing grouped by type in aforementioned glass vessels. Bonus points for spray painting them in hues of silver and rose gold (or baby blue and white). Don’t forget to keep an eye out for interesting branches or pieces of random wood to take back too. There’s something really special (and cheap!) about a long branch down the length of the table with tons of votives and tapers in different heights and shades of white combined with a few spray-painted natural items and last year’s leftover wired metallic ribbon. (Hint: Make sure you save those gently loved adornments from this year’s treasures so you’ve got plenty to choose from next year!) Not up for foraging? The dollar store always seems to have super cheap bags of walnuts and other nuts in their shells that definitely take favorably to a little spray paint.
- Trick Out the (Would Be) Cheesy: I don’t usually love fake greenery unless it’s super fake (like a pink flocked flamingo tree, then I’m in.) If you run in the same circle, why not use up that leftover metallic spray paint or glue and glitter on the tips of those random pieces of garland that have lost their luster? Another secret trick is to pull apart the fake tree that’s missing some crucial pieces and repurpose it into some down the dining table magic. Super insider trick is to head to the Christmas tree lot and ask for the branch scraps from the guy leveling the trunks to fit the stands. Not only will you keel over at the magical fragrance, but you’ll also really lose it when you know all of that fir only cost a smile.
