Like many other people, one of your new year’s resolutions may involve losing weight.

If so, here are the top 5 foods for pound shedding according to Andrea Szebeni, a registered nutritionist and dietician with the Lighthouse Recovery Institute (www.lighthouserecoveryinstitute.com), which helps people around the country find healthy ways to overcome eating and other disorders.

Blueberries

“These are my favorite of all and the best food for weight loss,” Szebeni emphasizes. All berries are good for you, but blueberries are the leaders. They have the highest antioxidant level of all commonly consumed fruit, are the lowest in sugar and are full of fiber with 3.6 grams of fiber per cup. Eat more: Instead of topping your cereal with fruit, fill your bowl with blueberries, then sprinkle cereal on top and add milk or yogurt.

Salmon

Not only do fish fats keep your heart healthy, but they shrink your waist, too. Omega-3 fatty acids improve insulin sensitivity, which helps build muscle and decrease belly fat. And the more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns. Opt for wild salmon; it may contain fewer pollutants.

Oats

All oats are healthy, but the steel-cut and rolled varieties, which are minimally processed, have up to 5 grams of fiber per serving, making them the most filling choice. Instant oats contain 3 to 4 grams of fiber per serving.

Soup

Start a meal with a cup of soup, and you will end up eating less. It doesn’t matter if the soup is chunky or pureed, as long as it’s broth-based.

Quinoa

Curbing hunger is as easy as piling your plate with this whole grain. It packs both fiber (2.6 grams per 1/2 cup) and lots of protein and is a great nutrient-dense food that can keep you satisfied for hours.
