2. The J House Greenwich – Greenwich, Connecticut

The J House is more contemporary and social, with Tony’s at the J House right downstairs. Tony’s is an Italian steakhouse and bar with homemade pasta, dry-aged steaks, fish and sushi. In other words, you can arrive hungry and stay put.

3. The Roundhouse – Beacon, New York
Approximate drive from Bedford: 45-60 minutes
Two people in the Facebook thread independently nominated The Roundhouse, which feels correct. The hotel occupies restored factory buildings above a rushing waterfall, steps from Beacon’s Main Street. Its restaurant serves seasonal Modern American food in a room with floor-to-ceiling waterfall views.
Do dinner there, but leave enough room in the weekend for Beacon. Walk Main Street, stop for espresso and something sweet, browse a little, and end with a drink back at the falls. It is one of the rare getaways where the view, the meal and the town all do equal work.

The Restaurant is set in a glass conservatory wrapped in greenery and uses French techniques with Hudson Valley ingredients.
Hudson is also the ideal park-the-car town. Warren Street gives you architecture, antiques, clothes, coffee and enough excellent restaurants to turn one overnight into a full weekend. The Facebook commenter also singled out Feast & Floret, Cafe Mutton, Via Cassia, Le Perche and Swoon Kitchenbar as nearby options.

5. Hotel Kinsley – Kingston, New York

8. Winvian Farm – Morris, Connecticut

Winvian is the special-occasion splurge on this list. Its cottages are famously individual, and the dining program uses ingredients from the property’s gardens and greenhouses. The Restaurant offers fine dining, while Maggie’s Tavern is the more relaxed option. In-room dining can bring the whole experience to your cottage.

The Inn at Pound Ridge came up in the comments, and it is absolutely a wonderful dinner recommendation. But despite the name, it is a restaurant, not a hotel. Keep it on the date-night list, not the overnight list.
