Every September, someone texts me in a panic: “Wait, the Halloween thing is already sold out?” Yes. In Sleepy Hollow, Halloween starts when the rest of us are still pretending summer is not over.
If you want prime October dates, now is the moment to book. The biggest mistake is waiting until you have coordinated every cousin, teenager and reluctant husband. Secure the hard ticket first. Sort out dinner later.
First priority: The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
The Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor is the headline event for a reason: thousands of hand-carved pumpkins, music, theatrical lighting and that perfect mix of impressive and slightly spooky. Weekend evenings and the time slots that work for families tend to disappear first.
Buy directly from Historic Hudson Valley, choose a time your group can realistically make, and leave room for traffic and parking. This is not a “we’ll just show up around eight” situation.
Book early: Headless Horseman’s Hideaway
Historic Hudson Valley has expanded the evening with a more theatrical, grown-up add-on. If your group wants more atmosphere than adorable pumpkins, look at the ticket combinations before they vanish. Read the age guidance first if you are bringing younger children.

The cemetery is gorgeous, historic and wonderfully moody in fall. Guided tours are a very different experience from wandering around on your own, and popular October times can fill quickly. Book through the official cemetery schedule and follow the visitor rules. It is still an active cemetery, not a movie set.
Do not forget Irving’s “Legend” country
Washington Irving’s Sunnyside gives the season context and makes a great daytime pairing with an evening ticket. Kykuit and nearby historic sites can round out a full Hudson Valley day, but check seasonal hours before building your itinerary.
The dinner problem
Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown restaurants know exactly what is happening in October. If you have a Saturday-night ticket, make the reservation now. My preferred plan is an early dinner, then the attraction. A late dinner with cold, hungry people in costume accessories is how friendships are tested.

1. Timed Halloween ticket.
2. Dinner reservation.
3. Cemetery or historic-site tour.
4. A weatherproof layer that does not ruin the outfit.
A few practical notes: Buy from official ticket pages, check refund and rain policies, and never assume a resale ticket includes the right date or location. Build in extra drive time. And charge your phone, because apparently every pumpkin now requires its own portrait session.
