Sciatica Struggles? Here’s How to Help Your Loved One

If you’ve ever watched someone you love deal with sciatica, you know it’s no joke. My husband is going through it right now, and let me tell you—it’s heartbreaking to see him in so much pain. Sciatica isn’t just a sore back. It’s a sharp, sometimes burning pain that shoots from the lower back down the leg, and it can make even the simplest things—like sitting at the dinner table or getting a good night’s sleep—feel impossible.

So what can you do when your partner (or you!) is suffering with sciatica? Here are a few tips that have helped us:

1. Keep Moving—Gently

As tempting as it is to lie in bed all day, that often makes sciatica worse. Short walks and light stretching can do wonders. Gentle yoga poses like child’s pose or cat-cow help loosen things up.

2. Try Heat and Ice

Cold packs help with inflammation in the first day or two, and then switching to heat (like a heating pad or warm bath) can relax tight muscles. Pro tip: alternate between the two if one alone isn’t cutting it.

3. Position is Everything

Lying flat doesn’t always help. Try propping a pillow under the knees when lying on the back, or between the knees when lying on the side. A little adjustment can make a huge difference.

4. Encourage Self-Care

Over-the-counter pain relievers (if safe for them), massage, and good ergonomic support while sitting can all provide relief. Even adjusting a desk chair or using a lumbar pillow can ease pressure.

5. Know When to Call the Doctor

If the pain is unbearable, isn’t getting better, or comes with leg weakness, numbness, or bladder/bowel issues, it’s time to see a doctor ASAP.

Sciatica is tough—but with the right care, comfort, and a little patience, most people do recover. In the meantime, being supportive (and maybe running to fetch the heating pad at 2 a.m.) makes all the difference.

Have you or someone in your family dealt with sciatica? What worked for you? Share your tips in the comments—I know my husband (and plenty of others) would be grateful!
