On Valentine’s Day (Monday, 2/14) starting at 11 am, The Times Square Alliance will host their annual “Love in Times Square” press op, featuring two surprise proposals, two weddings, and a vow renewal on the Red Steps in front of the 14th Annual Love and Design Competition winner – Bloom by Habitat Workshop.
More on the couples:
- After a tough year overcoming cancer, the loss of a child, and the challenges of COVID-19, this couple remembered fondly a family trip to Times Square and wanted to return to this special place for their special day.
- At 12:00 pm, another couple who met on the school bus to middle school and most recently got together in 2016 will tie the knot in the heart of Times Square on Valentine’s Day.
- Both ceremonies will be conducted for the 9th year in a row by licensed NYS officiant and Times Square Alliance Vice President of People & Culture, Hollis Kam.
- At 11:30 am and 12:30 pm, lucky lovers will be surprised with a Valentine’s Day gift that they – and everyone else in Times Square – won’t see coming and won’t soon forget: a surprise marriage proposal on Times Square’s iconic American Eagle screen, including a same-sex proposal.
Also, beginning at 6 pm on 2/14, a celebration of love and commitment will take place outside on the Red Steps. The ceremony is free and open to people of all ages, genders, religions, races, and backgrounds. Joining us to kick off the ceremony will be one comic from Carolines on Broadway’s February 14 My Funny Valentine show – and 5 lucky winners will receive vouchers for a pair of tickets to future shows. Attendees will also be treated to a live performance by Julia Udine and Paul A. Schaefer of “All I Ask of You” from the hit Broadway musical The Phantom of the Opera. Also, thanks to our local Times Square steakhouse, Bacall’s NYC, couples will receive chocolate roses at the event.

All of the festivities will overlook and engage with the winner of this year’s 14th annual Love in Times Square Design Competition: “Bloom” by Habitat Workshop. From afar, Bloom will resemble a pavilion — a circular roof supported by a series of interlocked red and white PVC pipes. From above, it blooms from the center with an arrangement of pixelated hearts. And from below, it becomes a buoyant cloudscape where the pipes overhead, descending to different heights, become vaulted portals allowing light to peek through from all directions. The structure channels the brightness of Times Square and showers down rays of light that greet visitors once they enter the structure, serving as a reminder of the fleeting moments of happiness and joy that persevere even in the shroud of darkness. Bloom is an homage to the collective love for humanity — a shared experience that creates a sheltered canopy in the middle of Times Square — for all New Yorkers and visitors alike. Embodying both human fragility and strength, the work reminds us that we are all bound together, each with the responsibility to uplift and support one another so we can float together.
Footage and images of the celebration will be available upon request after the event. Footage and images of Bloom will be made available after the public unveiling on February 9th.
