Choosing the Right Window Coverings for Your Home

It’s always fun to come up with new ideas for improvements we can make to our living space. Whether we own our own home, or are renting a condo, house or apartment, there are always special things we can do to create an even more nurturing, beautiful nest. Painting a room, adding splashes of color or finding some interesting new artwork can do a lot to transform our interior space. Our goal is to create a very special place to call home.

Choosing the right window treatments can add beauty to your rooms, and they also serve a functional purpose too. Shades or blinds can help provide privacy, and come in a variety of styles that can really help beautify your home. With blinds, you get slats that can be adjusted and tilted to control the light coming in. You can also lower or raise blinds. Shades can be pulled up or lowered, and those that offer sheer shadings with multiple fabric pieces can also be tilted for light control.

Design and Style

Shades and blinds have major differences in terms of style and design. Blinds are defined by a slat-like structure that lets you precisely control how you open or close them. There are a variety of styles and options available, including faux wood, wood, aluminum and even vertical blinds.

Shades may not be quite as convenient as blinds, because there are no adjustable slats that control the light coming in. In general, you have to either raise and open the shade, or keep it closed. With shades, though, you can find a wide range of beautiful colors and styles. Types of shades include honeycomb, roller shades, Roman shades and sheer shades.

Light Control and Privacy

Shades and blinds offer different ways to handle light control and privacy within your home. The slats on blinds are easily adjustable, so you have granular flexibility with how much light you let into your dwelling. The inside of your home is visible, though, when the slats are fully open.

Shades with a single piece of fabric give you a choice of one of two options, either open or closed. Adding a light filtering piece of fabric, though, gives you the best of both worlds. When you add this sheer, you can have natural light coming in and still have your window covered so you have interior privacy.

Recommended Use

If you have an area of the home where you don’t require a lot of privacy, and want to be able to control exactly how much outside light comes into your home, then blinds would be a good choice. You will often see blinds used in family or living room windows, and hallways.

Shades are perfect for areas of your home where you desire and need more privacy. Thus you will often see them on bedroom windows. Shades may also be a better choice if you have children, because they aren’t damaged as easily as blinds.

When it comes to window coverings in your home, both shades and blinds provide a affordable solutions. There are wonderful designer options, and you can choose which works best for you depending on your need for privacy and light control.
