Bedford Playhouse Announces ReOpening of the Playhouse Café on Friday December 3rd featuring Guest Culinary Artist Matt Safarowic

Bedford Playhouse has announced it will reopen the Playhouse Café this Friday, December 3, just in time for the holiday season. Acclaimed Westchester Chef Matthew Safarowic has joined as featured Guest Culinary Artist.

“We are thrilled to reopen the Playhouse Café and welcome the incredible Matt Safarowic as our guest culinary artist,” said Michael “Hoagy” Hoagland, executive director, Bedford Playhouse. “Matt has an impressive track record of working in some of the most highly regarded restaurants in the region in a variety of roles. We can’t wait to have him here.”

“As a kid, I always loved heading to my local theater to see whatever blockbuster my brothers and I were excited about and eat all of our favorite movie snacks and treats.  I’m so looking forward to incorporating some theater classics and comfort food into the new menu at The Playhouse Cafe, making it the community gathering spot,” said Matthew Safarowic. “Our small bite-focused menu will have something for everyone and every occasion, whether it be date night, girls night or a family get-together, with a healthy helping of nostalgia.”

Chef Matthew Safarowic has been cooking in kitchens all over Westchester for the past 20 years.  Matt began working in restaurant kitchens at age 15 as a dishwasher. After completing a BOCES culinary program in high school and graduating from Johnson & Wales University’s Culinary Program in 2002, he embarked on his professional journey in some of the best restaurants in Westchester (The Cookery, The Parlor, Fortina, Zuppa),  well as stints in Executive Dining at both Pepsico and Hearst Publications.  In 2017, he founded The Whitlock in Katonah, NY, a neighborhood American bistro, with his wife Christina, gaining him a Michelin Guide mention in 2020 (one of 30 restaurants in Westchester County), as well as the award for Best New Restaurant 2018 by Westchester Magazine. In 2019, he and Christina founded Jay Street Cafe in Katonah, an all-day cafe with a modern twist on diner comforts, which was awarded Best New Cafe in 2020 by Westchester Magazine.

The Playhouse Café will be open for dinner Tuesday through Friday, with extended hours on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit bedfordplayhouse.org.
