Where to Celebrate National Dumpling Day Weekend in Westchester

I saw TAO Downtown’s dim sum tasting platter promo this week and my first thought was: great, but that’s Manhattan. TAO doesn’t have a location anywhere in Westchester, and the closest one is in Chelsea, about an hour from my house in Bedford. So I went looking for where we can celebrate closer to home.

Here’s the timing. National Dumpling Day is Saturday, September 26, and the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is Friday, September 25. That’s a whole weekend built for dumplings, buns and bamboo steamers, and Westchester has more good options than you’d think.

One honest note: none of these spots is advertising a special Dumpling Day menu (at least not yet). You don’t need one. These are simply the places I’d go this weekend, starting with the one closest to Bedford.

1. Grandma Wonton King, Yorktown Heights

385 Kear St, Yorktown Heights | about 25 minutes from Bedford

This is the one for us northern Westchester people. It’s a small spot built around handmade wontons, crispy dumplings and noodle soups, with soup dumplings on the menu too. The reviews keep saying the same thing: finally, excellent Chinese food up north. Easy for dine-in or takeout.

Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 11 a.m.-9 p.m., closed Monday.

2. Aberdeen Seafood & Dim Sum, White Plains

3 Barker Ave, White Plains | about 27 minutes from Bedford

Aberdeen is the classic. It’s named after the famous fishing harbor in Hong Kong, it’s known for Cantonese seafood, and the dim sum is made fresh every day. If you want the real, traditional dim sum lunch with a big table and lots of little plates, this is where I’d go. Plan on lunch, since that’s when dim sum is at its best.

Hours: Lunch 12-3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Dinner from 5 p.m. (until 9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday). Closed Tuesday.

3. Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings, White Plains

27 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains | about 26 minutes from Bedford

The newcomer everyone is talking about. Nan Xiang started in Flushing in 2006, has been recommended by the Michelin Guide for nine years in a row, and opened in downtown White Plains this summer. This is Shanghainese food, so think soup dumplings (xiao long bao) more than a dim sum spread. If it’s your first time, the owners suggest the pork or crab and pork soup dumplings, or the Lucky Six to try a few flavors. Don’t skip the pan-fried pork buns either. White Plains is also the location with a full bar.

Hours: I couldn’t find posted hours for the White Plains location, so call ahead: (914) 252-6666.

4. Nana’s Dim Sum & Dumplings, Scarsdale

709 White Plains Rd, Scarsdale | about 33 minutes from Bedford

Nana’s opened in summer 2025 and it’s all about family recipes passed down from the owners’ grandmother. The menu is Cantonese with dim sum at its core: crystal shrimp dumplings, shrimp and pork shu mai, black bean spareribs, plus buns for dessert like salted egg custard and red bean. Good for a group that wants to share everything. Right now the seasonal specials include coconut shrimp and lychee cloud shrimp balls.

Hours: Monday-Thursday 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 4-9:30 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Call (914) 487-0030.

5. Goosefeather, Tarrytown

49 E Sunnyside Ln, Tarrytown (at Tarrytown House Estate) | about 35 minutes from Bedford

This is the dress-it-up option. Chef Dale Talde’s Cantonese restaurant is in the Michelin Guide, and the setting on the estate grounds is gorgeous. The dinner menu has a whole dim sum section (dry-aged beef potstickers, crab rangoon scallion pancake, crispy shrimp bao), and weekend brunch has pork and shrimp shumai and fried chicken dumplings, with a bottomless brunch drink option. I’ve written about Dale’s dumpling class before, so you know I’m a fan. Book on Resy.

Hours: Brunch Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Dinner Monday-Thursday 5-9 p.m., Friday 5-10:30 p.m., Saturday 4-10:30 p.m., Sunday 4-8 p.m.

My pick

If I’m doing one thing this weekend, it’s dim sum lunch on Saturday. Aberdeen for the traditional spread, or Grandma Wonton King if I don’t want to drive far. And if you’re celebrating the Moon Festival on Friday night, Goosefeather is the one to book.

Drive times are approximate from Bedford without traffic. Hours are from each restaurant’s website or listing as of September 23, so check before you go, especially on a holiday weekend.
