Just when you think you’ve seen everything Westchester has to offer… something like this pops up.
The Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows are back, and if you haven’t gone, consider this your sign. It’s one of those events that feels very insider, very country chic, and somehow still completely accessible.
Taking place at Old Salem Farm, this two-week series (May 5–10 and May 12–17, from 8am–5pm daily) brings together world-class equestrian competition… and yes, admission is free.
Why You’ll Want to Go
This isn’t just a horse show. It’s a whole scene.
You’ve got Olympic-level riders competing—like local legend McLain Ward—alongside international stars including Rodrigo Pessoa and Nayel Nassar. Even Katie Dinan is coming in hot after a bronze medal at the FEI World Cup Final.
And the competitions? Not small.
Think:
- $125,000 Grand Prix (May 10)
- $225,000 Empire State Grand Prix (May 17)
It’s giving elite, but without the attitude.
It’s Not Just for Horse People (Promise)
Even if you don’t know anything about equestrian sports, you’ll still have a great time:
- Pony rides and face painting
- Arts & crafts with the North Salem Historical Society
- Dog adoptions (you’ve been warned…)
- Ice cream parties (say less)
- Boutique Row shopping (yes, I will be there)
It’s one of those rare events where you can bring kids, friends, or just yourself and feel equally entertained.
The Vibe

Picture this: rolling green fields, beautiful horses mid-jump, stylish spectators, and that perfect mix of relaxed and polished.
It’s about an hour from NYC, but it feels like a mini escape—without the stress of actually planning one.
Bonus: Art + Feel-Good Moments
This year also features equine-inspired art by sculptor Precious Eboigbodin and photographer Drew Doggett, with proceeds supporting the New Canaan Mounted Troop. Love a little culture with my day out.
When to Go
Mark these if you want a little extra:
- May 9 & 16: Family fun days (pony rides, crafts, dog adoptions, ice cream)
- May 10: $125K Grand Prix
- May 17: $225K Empire State Grand Prix
The Bottom Line
We are always looking for things to do… and sometimes the best ones are literally down the road.
Free. Fun. A little fabulous.
I’ll see you there.
