According to the uSell.com Gadget Mass Index, 42% of Americans suffer from “Extreme Gadget Obesity” (a measure of a person’s propensity to store unused gadgets).
To calculate the country’s gadget obesity rates for the new year, used electronics marketplace uSell.com asked 1,000 Americans how long they keep devices they no longer use (instead of selling them or otherwise disposing of them).
Some key findings include:
>> 30% of Americans have “moderate gadget weight” and keep their old gadgets for 1 to 6 months without ever using them.
10% of Americans suffer from “severe gadget weight” and keep their unused, older-model gadgets for 7 months to 1 year.
42% of Americans demonstrate “extreme gadget obesity” and will store unused devices for at least 2 years (or possibly never “shed the weight”).
GENDER DIFFERENCES:
Interestingly, the uSell.com study shows that men and women who are successful in their resolution to “shape up” are motivated by different factors:
A) MEN FOCUS ON RESELL VALUE
Men who know that their old gadgets will lose value over time are much more likely to shed excess phone weight than men who do not.
B) WOMEN PRIORITIZE IMPROVED ORGANIZATION
Women who have a strong need to clean out home clutter in the new year are much more likely to shed excess gadget weight than other women.
