The English language and its influence on culture go hand in hand. This is even more true in the digital age, when younger generations change social lexicon far faster than their older counterparts.
To find out which new words Americans of all ages love and love to hate, Preply surveyed 1,000+ Americans.
Key Findings:

Americans’ favorite new words are “gameplay”, “side hustle” and “content warning.”

The most hated additions are “misper,” “cheeseparing,” and “zaddy”.

Women on average gravitate to fliriter terms than men

While 9 in 10 men like the term “gameplay” (tactical aspects of video game playing), 4 in 5 women like the term “silver fox” (handsome, gray-haired man). Women also liked terms like “throuple” and “zaddy” more.

Emotional terms like “verklempt” (overcome with emotion), also appealed to nearly twice as many women as men.

Men love the word “metaverse” more than women: 18% of men liked the term vs. 12% of women.

72% of men are more likely to be upset over addition of the term “heteropatriarchy” (a society dominated by heterosexual men biased against gay people and women) – vs. 56% of women.
