Leap Day (Fur) Babies | Patients from Schwarzman Animal Medical Center Born on February 29th

This Leap Year, millions of “leapers” around the world will have the chance to celebrate their birthdays on the actual day they were born. But humans aren’t the only ones celebrating. See some some of the previous patients at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) in New York City are celebrating their special birthday on February 29th. These Leap Year (fur) babies all received care from AMC, from minor to life-saving operations, and are getting ready for their big day.

·         Orzo Angello is a “Desert Goth” black pug celebrating his 12th birthday (or 3rd) birthday. He enjoys snuggling with his two sisters and, unfortunately, loves to eat socks. After getting one stuck in his intestines, Orzo was rushed to AMC’s emergency unit and was immediately brought in for surgery. He was released a few days later in great condition and has yet to learn his lesson! As a well-traveled pup, Orzo enjoys trips out West with his owner, Tiziana. He is also the furry ambassador of Tiziana’s pet supply business LoveThyBeast, acting as toy tester and clothing model. His family celebrates his birthday each year by dressing him in a special crown as they sing “Happy Birthday” to him. This year, they plan to make him a special apple, yogurt, and salmon cake and load up his Lickmat with his favorite spreads.

·         Oskar Price, aka “Munchie,” is an English bulldog turning 8 years old. He is rambunctious and keeps his owner, Carol, on her toes with ear infections and eye scratches, and first came to AMC in 2018 for a life-saving special soft pallet surgery, which is still holding strong today. This past July, Oskar also underwent pericardial surgery due to a tumor on his heart that could not be removed. He made it through with flying colors and is now on a daily chemo pill and back to romping around with his siblings as usual. His owners typically have a family birthday for Oskar and treat him to toys and cake as he wears his special birthday hat. If the weather is good, they hope to celebrate his year with a big barbecue bash on the beach with burgers and, of course, presents!

·         Winter McKirdy, a cream-colored Standard Poodle, turns 4 this year on his first true birthday. His human mom, Laura, also owns Winter’s mother, Daisy, who gave birth to a “Leap Day Litter” of nine puppies. In July of 2023, Winter ended up at AMC after swallowing a sock. The surgeons performed a gastronomy and a gastropexy, and Winter recovered well. Laura will always be grateful to AMC for saving her puppy’s life. Winter is not only a champion show dog but also participates in agility. His birthday has always been celebrated with that of a relative born on February 28, but this year he gets his day. He will bring special treats to his agile classmates and be crowned king for the day.

·         Gunner Snyder is an energetic pup who will be turning 8 this year. Gunner was taken to AMC last year after Pamela was concerned about his bloating after choking from eating too quickly. AMC conducted a test and found that he was fine. His favorite activities are playing ball and trips to the beach, which is exactly how Pamela plans to celebrate his birthday. He will also be treated to a lavish birthday meal – a hamburger with sweet potato kibble and a little whipped cream on top.
