One of the things I love most about Westchester is that no matter what your interests are, there’s always a community waiting to welcome you. And if you’re a mahjong or canasta player spending time in Westchester this summer, you’re in luck.
Recently, a reader reached out and asked:
“I’m going to be in Westchester this summer. If there are any mahjong or canasta events you know of, can you let me know?”
The answer is yes — and there are more options than you might think.
Whether you’re looking for a casual drop-in game, a weekly group, lessons, tournaments, or simply a way to meet new friends, here’s where to find the action this summer.
Weekly Mahjong and Canasta in Westchester
JCC Mid-Westchester
One of the easiest places to find regular games is the JCC Mid-Westchester, which offers open play sessions for mahjong, canasta, and Scrabble.
When: Tuesdays and Wednesdays
Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
It’s a friendly environment where both experienced players and newcomers can connect.
Shames JCC
Canasta players should definitely check out the Shames JCC.
When: Tuesdays
Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
They offer both beginner and intermediate/advanced groups, and tables are often mixed so players can meet new people.
Library Mahjong Groups
One of Westchester’s best-kept secrets is the number of library-based mahjong groups.
Croton Free Library
The Croton Free Library regularly hosts open mahjong play sessions.
These gatherings are casual, welcoming, and ideal for anyone looking for a friendly game without a long-term commitment.
Greenburgh Public Library
Greenburgh Public Library also offers open-play mahjong on select Mondays.
Players should know the basics of American Mahjong, but all skill levels are welcome.
Looking to Learn?
The Modern Mahj
Founded by Harrison resident Steph Loewenthal, The Modern Mahj has helped introduce mahjong to an entirely new generation of players.
From beginners to seasoned enthusiasts, her classes and events have become incredibly popular throughout Westchester.
If you’ve always wanted to learn but felt intimidated, this is a fantastic place to start.
Let’s Play Mahjong NY
Serving Westchester and the Hudson Valley, this organization offers:
- Beginner lessons
- Open play nights
- Private instruction
- Group events
- Corporate and social gatherings
Perfect if you’re traveling with friends and want to organize your own game.
Canasta Players, Don’t Worry
Canasta continues to grow in popularity throughout the region.
In addition to the weekly JCC games, many private groups meet throughout Westchester and Southern Connecticut.
One local instructor to know is Jamie Meadow, who teaches both mahjong and modern canasta in Westchester, Connecticut, and Palm Beach.
Make a Day Trip of It
If you’re willing to venture just outside Westchester, you’ll find even more opportunities.
Museum of Jewish Heritage Mah Jongg Festival
This New York City event has quickly become one of the most talked-about mahjong gatherings in the region.
Designed for everyone from complete beginners to tournament-level players, it combines community, competition, and plenty of mahjong fun.
Westport and Fairfield County
Connecticut’s canasta and mahjong scene is thriving, with tournaments, social games, and charity events popping up throughout the summer.
It’s an easy day trip from most of Westchester.
Why Mahjong and Canasta Are Having a Moment
If you’ve noticed mahjong and canasta everywhere lately, you’re not imagining it.
What was once considered your grandmother’s game has become one of the hottest social activities around.
People love the combination of strategy, friendship, and community. New clubs are forming every month, and players range from their twenties to their eighties.
In a world dominated by screens, these games offer something increasingly rare: genuine face-to-face connection.
My Advice
If you’re spending the summer in Westchester and love mahjong or canasta, don’t wait for an invitation.
Visit a JCC, stop by a library game, sign up for a lesson, or join a local Facebook group.
You’ll probably leave with new friends, a standing game, and a much fuller social calendar.
And if you discover a great mahjong or canasta group in Westchester that isn’t listed here, send me a message. I love sharing local finds with the StacyKnows community.
See you at the card table.
