Study Says Toxic People Can Accelerate Aging — Here’s What to Do About It

Toxic People in Your Life Could Be Aging You Faster, Study Says

If you’ve ever walked away from a conversation feeling completely drained, science now says you may not be imagining things.

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggests that toxic people in your life could actually speed up your biological aging.

Yes — those difficult personalities may be doing more than ruining your mood. They could be affecting your health on a cellular level.

The Surprising Link Between Toxic Relationships and Aging

Researchers analyzed data from more than 2,000 adults in Indiana, examining how difficult social relationships impact aging.

The study focused on people described as hasslers”individuals who consistently create stress, conflict, or emotional strain.

About 30% of participants said they had at least one hassler in their social network.

Using biological clocks that measure changes in DNA linked to aging, researchers discovered something striking:

  • Each toxic person was linked to a 1.5% faster pace of biological aging

  • Participants with more “hasslers” had a biological age about nine months older

  • They also showed higher inflammation, more chronic conditions, and worse mental health

In other words, your social circle might be influencing your health more than you think.

What Is Biological Aging?

Your chronological age is the number of years you’ve been alive.

But biological age reflects how your body is actually aging at the cellular level.

Factors like stress, sleep, diet, exercise — and even your relationshipscan affect how quickly that clock ticks.

So while you may be 55 on paper, your body could be functioning younger… or older.

And according to this research, stressful relationships may push that biological clock forward.

Why Toxic People Affect Your Health

When you’re around someone who constantly criticizes, complains, or creates drama, your body reacts with stress.

Chronic stress can trigger:

  • Increased inflammation

  • Higher cortisol levels

  • Sleep disruption

  • Anxiety and emotional fatigue

Over time, those responses can impact everything from heart health to immune function.

Study co-author Byungkyu Lee of NYU’s sociology department explained that while avoiding these people entirely isn’t always possible — especially when they’re family members — learning how to manage those relationships can make a big difference.

How to Deal With Toxic People Without Losing Your Mind

Completely cutting someone off isn’t always realistic. But there are ways to protect your energy and health.

1. Set Clear Boundaries

Decide what behavior you will tolerate — and what you won’t.

It’s okay to say things like:

  • I’d rather not talk about that.”

  • Let’s change the subject.”

  • I’m going to step away from this conversation.”

2. Limit Exposure

If someone consistently drains you, reduce how often you interact with them.

Shorter visits, fewer phone calls, and avoiding certain topics can make a huge difference.

3. Don’t Take It Personally

Toxic behavior usually reflects the other person’s insecurities or frustrations — not your worth.

Learning to emotionally detach helps protect your mental health.

4. Avoid the Drama

Some people thrive on conflict.

Refusing to engage in gossip or arguments removes the fuel that keeps toxic behavior going.

5. Surround Yourself With Positive People

The study found that the balance of your social network matters.

Supportive friendships can help counteract the stress created by difficult relationships.

The Bottom Line

Life is too short — and apparently too precious for your cells — to spend surrounded by negativity.

While you may not be able to eliminate every difficult person from your life, being mindful of how those relationships affect you can help protect your mental and physical well-being.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is simply choose peace over drama.

And your body may thank you for it.
