Spring Break is a time when many college students like to cut loose and forget about exams for a few days, but unfortunately, focusing too much on fun and not enough on personal safety can have tragic consequences.

To help college students stay safe while on Spring Break, Marcia Peot, full time police officer and Chief Safety Officer at StreetSafe, offers the following safety reminders:

1. Don’t let your guard down.  Being on vacation is not an excuse to throw caution to the wind and do something you wouldn’t normally do or put yourself in an unsafe situation.
2. Research the place you are visiting before you go, especially if it’s a foreign country.  Find out if there are dangerous areas you should avoid, familiarize yourself with local laws and customs, and know where to go and what to do in case of an emergency.
3. Stay in groups or use the buddy system.  You are more of a target when you are by yourself.
4. A stranger is still a stranger, even on vacation.  Do not accept a ride or go off somewhere alone with a person you don’t know.
5. Do not drink excessively.  When you are intoxicated, your physical reflexes, awareness of your surroundings, and ability to make decisions become impaired, making you an easy target.
6. Never leave your drink unattended and do not accept beverages from anyone other than the bartender or waiter.
7. The beaten path is the better path.  Stick to populated and well-lit areas, don’t take short cuts, and familiarize yourself with the area before heading out.
8. Make sure your hotel room is locked at all times.  Do not advertise your room number, open the door for anyone you are not expecting, or bring strangers back to your room.

Pinterest is a fun and active social network perfect for those who are visually based. 

What is Pinterest? It’s a social network like Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus but it’s based on sharing (or pinning) cool, fun or interesting images. The interface is simple, intuitive and generally speaking, it’s a fun site to be on and look at. Everything from luscious food to home design and eco tech to cool fashion is highlighted on the site by members.

People are pinning shoes, clothes, movies, food, gorgeous  things and icky things.  

Pinterest puts web content into sticky-note sized blocks users can organize onto pinboards that fill the entire browser screen. The majority of each block is filled by a photo, and the ability to “like,” “repin” or comment at the bottom make it look like its own mini web page.

 What people are choosing to pin. Most of the things I see on these sites aren’t actually purchasable. There’s a lot of content that can best be classified as aspirational or inspirational. People are collecting images of beautiful things.

Though the site is still in invite-only beta, here are a few tips on getting started:

Lure your audience: This is a chance for bloggers to drive more traffic to their sites, and possibly transform casual visitors to loyal subscribers. As always with social media, make content compelling.

Simple, organized and searchable: One of Pinterest’s greatest appeals is its simplicity. It’s easy to use, so make it easy for people to find and follow your boards. Department stores like Nordstrom do a great job organizing content under SEO-friendly categories like “Valentine’s Day at Nordstrom” and “Spring Trend.”

Combine networks: The key to Pinterest success is to amass followers. Use Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and Google+ to drive interest in Pinterest.

Promote more than products: Avoid shameless self-promotion; engage in conversation with other users and offer up tips, news and similar products from other companies.

Follow big names:The best exposure is to align with the most popular names on Pinterest. Make sure to also follow who’s pinning your content.
