I love watching anything with Anthony Bourdain. Shows like “No Reservations” travel to places in the world I wouldn’t ever dream of going to if I hadn’t seen them on television first. It’s not just the food he highlights, but the culture he dives into that makes me put pins on a map to all the countries I want to travel to.

photo: WNYC radio

And then I look at my bank account.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like these shows fool us into thinking travel is cheap, but it does set some financial expectations we’re not prepared for. An Alabama Crimson White column talks about how these shows fall short of realistic budgeting standards for folks like you and me — showing us all the glitz and glamour of the world without giving the real price tag.

Amazing Race (CBS)

Possibly the most glamorous and fast-paced travel show on television, “Amazing Race” pits pairs of contestants against each other to complete scavenger hunts, challenges and puzzles while traveling to some of the world’s most exotic locations. Though the show is aired across a few months, the contest itself is finished in mere weeks. The duos never stay in a country for more than a day and often spend the duration of the show jet-lagged as they hope from continent to continent after each challenge.

So what’s wrong with it?

Nothing, if your pockets are bottomless and know everything about hotels and airlines — in every country in the world. “Amazing Race” is great for daydreaming and bucket listing, but the show offers no real value concerning where to stay, how to fly or even which areas to visit. Everything is so sped up that you can hardly take in what the country truly offers.

House Hunters International (HGTV)

If you’ve seen the original “House Hunters” on HGTV, you know it’s a show that takes (usually first time) home buyers and helps them with every detail of picking out the perfect house. The cameras follow them around to a few listings, watches as they discuss the finances with each other, and even hash it out when a couple disagrees on anything from the size of the kitchen to the size of the mortgage. The international version takes the same concept across borders and helps buyers look for the perfect property abroad.

So what’s wrong with it?

Part of the charm with the original version of “House Hunters” is that the majority of the homes on the show were starter homes — affordable properties an everyday person could buy. While not every spot on “House Hunters International” is a 10-bedroom mansion, that aspect of “I could live there someday” is completely gone. Instead of noting helpful details for your own home-buying experience, you’re essentially watching an international version of “Cribs.”

Departures (OLN – Canada)

It might be unfair to pick on this one, as it’s probably my favorite. “Departures” follows two best friends who leave behind their home in Toronto to see the world. What’s so different about this one? This show focuses much more on the emotional experience of traveling and less on the “good places to eat” type details. For all its glamor, it really does capture the spirit of what it means to see the world. You’ll have to be a Canadian subscriber to see this one. According to www.direct.tv, upgrades are available for other channels, but see what your provider carries if you want to pick up OLN.

So what’s wrong with it?

Honestly, not much. But it still makes the same mistake as the rest of these shows — it doesn’t hit home what it actually costs to see the world. The friends do have their budgeting moments throughout the series, but for the sake of good television, they would never skip on an adventure because it costs too much.

The question of the week. Where should I stay in The Hamptons? Well, that all depends on what’s most important to you.

While the hotel at the Topping Rose House won’t be open until May of 2013, they’re already accepting reservations. And, as you might expect based upon the restaurant’s price point, they are expensive. In fact, they can lay claim to the title of “Most Expensive In The Hamptons” by a pretty wide margin. A weekend stay in one of the “cheaper” rooms is going to set you back a whopping $2,120.88. Two nights in the Cottage Suite? That’ll be $6,697.50, please.

To put that in perspective, rates at the Inn At Windmill Lane—the area’s previous title holder—top out at $2100/night. Believe it or not, a couple of weekends in June and July are already sold out. So, wealthy vacationers, better make those travel arrangements soon. Otherwise, there may be no room at the inn come next season.

If you like to wake up on the ocean, there are a number of choices, be forewarned there are no Four Seasons or Ritz Carltons here. The rooms , in my opinion are adequate, and like I said they are on the ocean. These are in Amagansett or if want

to be technical Napeague , which is the stretch of land between Amagansett and Montauk. If the weather is good, it doesn’t matter what you room looks like because you will be on the beach all day.

Sick of your job? Want to start your own business? Facing an empty nest? Starting a new relationship or leaving an old one? Interested in matters of the mind and body?
Keynote speakers Marci Alboher and Barbara Hannah Grufferman will set the tone for the day. Alboher is the former “Shifting Careers” columnist for the New York Times, vice president at Encore.org, and author of The Encore Career Handbook: How to Make a Living and a Difference in the Second Half of Life. Barbara Hannah Grufferman is a nationally recognized expert on healthy and positive aging and the author of The Best of Everything After 50: The Experts’ Guide to Style, Sex, Health, Money and More.

Whether they are building a new business, reconnecting with their inner artist, caring for aging parents and adult children, getting divorced or remarried, or seeking an entirely new adventure, BA50 women are taking charge of their futures. They use betterafter50.com as a platform through which to learn and inspire each other as well as gain knowledge from experts in technology, health, business, beauty, and finance. An interactive site that encourages women to share their ideas, information and feelings, BA50 brings women together to think, laugh and cry about topics of the heart, mind and soul, as they would while sitting with a good friend over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.

The travel industry has rebounded nicely from the 2008 recession, but some things never change: Vacation travel and frustration go hand-in-hand from the time we leave the airport.

In the most recent data released by the U.S. Travel Association, direct spending on leisure and travel by domestic and international travelers totaled $564 billion in 2011. The economic impact of adults who have cancelled vacations, or grew tired with the hassles of air travel and got turned off from taking off, is just as staggering.

A June 2008 study by the USTA noted that “a deep frustration among air travelers caused them to avoid an estimated 41 million trips over the past 12 months at a cost of more than $26 billion to the U.S. economy.” In more recent data, the Traveler Sentiment Index hasn’t been above 100 (which indicates a more positive than negative perception) since 2007. The index fell as low as 78.2 in 2009 before rebounding to 93.5 in April 2012 — still well short of the 100 score recorded in March 2007, according to USTA and MMGY Global data.

A common culprit seems to be the “all-inclusive vacation.”

The concept sounds too good to be true. Pay upfront for your entire package — food, lodging and ground transportation — then just sit back and enjoy your vacation. Companies have been providing this service for decades with travelers booking by phone. In the last 10 years, online outlets have made it easier to select your own round-trip flights as well.

Often, it is too good to be true. One recurring problem is that the company providing the “all-inclusive” package typically doesn’t own the hotel, the transportation company, or the activities you choose — it merely books the arrangements. Try to take a complaint to the company that booked your vacation, and they will forward you to the hotel, activity provider, or transportation company. Go there first, and they may try to blame the booking company.

Some horror stories border on the extreme. One traveling couple who booked an all-inclusive vacation in the Bahamas through the popular website Expedia.com was surprised to discover upon arriving that their resort was closing. Describing the experience on the website pissedconsumer.com, owned by market research firm Opinion Corp, they wrote: “They closed the Sunday we left and were dismantling the rooms, restaurants, bars, pool … around us while we were there. None of the amenities were available.”

Among the most popular targets for complaints is Apple Vacations. Founded in 1969, Apple Vacations began building the country’s largest provider of vacations to Mexico, Caribbean and Hawaii. In the late 1970s, the company became one of the first to introduce the concept of “all-inclusive vacations” to the U.S. market. For all their experience, Apple Vacations is not immune to the “all-inclusive” pitfalls like delayed flights, lost or incorrect hotel reservations, hidden costs, and poor customer service.

At least your local travel agent can address these concerns in person. Since Apple, Expedia and other all-inclusive vacation providers conduct business online and over the phone, face-to-face complaining isn’t a convenient option. “Long-distance runaround” isn’t just a song by Yes — it’s a good reason to say No to all-inclusive vacation packages.

Travel expert Paula Conway offers the following tips for booking an all-inclusive vacation:

1. Let the destination rule your decision – Some destinations are built for the all inclusive experience, while some simply aren’t. In the case where the resort is the destination, and there’s just not much to do outside the resort, the all-inclusive makes sense. Just make sure you want to do all of your eating and drinking at the resort before you book.

2. Advance book – The farther out you book, the best all-inclusive deal you will get. Also consider the air fare, which increases by the week, you don’t want to pay a premium on a vacation that can be booked out many months in advance and save you a lot of money.

3. Go off-season – If you want an all-inclusive in the Bahamas or Caribbean, the summer is when the resorts are least crowded and slash their rates. Summer and shoulder seasons (June to November) are your best bets for great travel deals, up to 60% off in many cases. And remember: don’t book during Spring Break (March/April) unless you love the idea of having the property packed with high school and college kids drinking heavily and partying into the wee hours of the night, while you are trying to sleep.

4. Do your homework – Read websites for honest reviews of the properties you have in mind. There’s plenty of good intelligence out there so brush up before you book.

5. Pay one fee – you can book everything from the air to the hotel on booking sites like Orbitz or Expedia. Don’t spread the cash around, make one booking and therefore one payment. Also be sure that all costs are included in what you’re booking, read the fine print.

6. Consider niche vacations – There are all-inclusive vacations for goodies, explorers, and fitness junkies. It doesn’t just have to be a large property filled with ongoing buffets. Look into what you really want to do and do your research.

7. Read the fine print – Some will say “all-inclusive meals,” which doesn’t mean that the resort is all-inclusive, but rather just that the meal includes drinks, and often that is even limited though the language doesn’t reflect it. Read everything carefully.

8. What is the tipping policy? – Some all-inclusive deals include tipping, while others do not. Don’t be stuck with $200 extra in tips at the end unless you accounted for it.

9. Food and drink – Many all-inclusives offer different types of dining: the all-you-can-eat buffet and snack bars that are open all or most of the time, and then there’s the more popular a la carte meals at set times throughout the day. The a la carte meal times will fill up fast, so you want to know in advance which restaurants you wish to try and make that reservation in advance. Drinks are typically a bulk affair, and drinkers appreciate the beer and cocktails that never end, but most non-drinkers don’t know that they have the option of ongoing fruit smoothies and juices, and don’t ask for this.

10. Upgrades – Upgrades can be very cost-effective with an all-inclusive package, having you arrive at some nice perks like a club-level suite and free Internet access for just a little more money.

Produced by André Rouleau, the film also stars Julie Le Breton, as David’s long suffering girlfriend who suddenly finds herself pregnant and understandably reluctant to share parenthood with the unreliable David, and Antoine Bertrand, David’s longtime friend, Paul, an attorney who takes on his case while trying to disabuse him of the joys of parenthood.

A runaway box office success in Quebec, STARBUCK premiered at the Toronto Film Festival as a Gala Presentation. English language remake rights for this all too human comedy were sold to Dreamworks. Directed by Ken Scott and starring Vince Vaughn, the American remake is currently set to be released under the title THE DELIVERY MAN on October 4. Entertainment One will release STARBUCK on March 22 in Los Angeles and New York, with a national rollout to follow.

The world is downtown New York City, present day – from the point of view of a driver for an escort service. John (Keanu Reeves), a quietly sexy withdrawn guy, is finally ageing out of his young, trendy neighborhood, dealing with the beginnings of the next chapter of his life.

John’s friends are the party girls he works for – Violet (Bojana Novakovic), an unstoppable entertainer whose weathered beauty and self-proclaimed wisdom are matched only by her lack of audience; and Mia (Adelaide Clemens), the new girl with the dark past, whose traffic-stopping sensuality has brought her nothing but victimization. Both survive on their ability to manipulate men, and don’t know how to live any other way. But John, they trust. And through their relationship, all three find a comforting and humorous refuge from the downward spiral of their self-destructive but entertaining lifestyles.

The end of another night out for this odd family of circumstance sets the stage for an all too familiar day spent coming to terms with and reveling in the lives they have unintentionally created for themselves.

When John impulsively steals a camcorder, he decides to capture the sights, sounds, and senses of New York – or rather, his sights, sounds, and senses. He records nature, people, himself. Today. John’s experiment takes a new turn when he pans the camera’s attention to his Party Girls. Violet is gung-ho, ready at a moment’s notice to become the center of attention before the focus fades away. Mia is less enthused, but finds herself opening up to the promise of a spectator.

John’s camcorder unravels the girls’ lives, as both Violet and Mia find themselves attempting to outdo one another’s secrets and opinions.

Ever gotten sick on an in-flight meal? Battled with a ticket agent? Waited at the carousel for luggage that never made it? You’re not alone. Thousands of travelers each year gripe about bad food, nasty employees, lost luggage and flight delays–especially during high-travel times of the year. In June, the Department of Transportation reported that complaints about the 15 largest U.S. airlines jumped more than 46 percent year-over-year. So just how bad is airline travel these days? That depends how you look at it.

More than half of the flights on Express Jet, Southwest, SkyWest and United were identified by the DOT as being “chronically delayed” –-which means the flights arrived more than 30 minutes late for at least two months in a row. When it came to mishandled baggage—lost, stolen, damaged, delayed—passengers filed 187,850 baggage reports, says the DOT. That sounds like a lot, but considering how many of us fly, it’s actually not so bad. American Airlines had more than 18,000 passengers complaining about their baggage in July, but it also served more than 6 million people, and that’s a lot of suitcases to manage.

Travel experts say it may be that airline passengers have unrealistic expectations, because they remember (or remember hearing about) the way things used to be—when meals and snacks were included in the price of a ticket, and flight attendants handed out pillows and blankets. These days, with airlines operating on very tight margins, those kinds of amenities will likely remain a memory, at least in the economy cabin. But remain they do, which is probably why the complaints keep coming. More than 800 passengers complained about U.S. airlines in the last six months on PissedConsumer.com, operated by market research firm Opinion Corp. Flyers are most often up in arms about refunds they don’t receive, hidden fees, lost and damaged luggage, pricey in-flight food (which isn’t very tasty either), seats being double booked and tickets snafus.

Among national carriers, United and American saw a notable rise in complaints, according to the 2012 Air Quality Ratings report co-authored by Dean E. Headley, an associate professor of marketing at Wichita State University and Brent D. Bowen, who heads the department of aviation technology at Purdue. United received one of the worst AQR scores of the 11 carriers ranked in the report, which may have been due to its merger with Continental. The carrier had more delayed arrivals than the year before and mishandled a lot more baggage.

Although many of these issues are beyond the control of customers, there are still ways for flyers to minimize potential air travel problems. Writing for the travel guide Frommer’s, Tracy Stewart of Airfarewatchdog.com suggested showing up very early for flights, buying a day pass for the airport lounge and not checking a bag, if possible. “Don’t try cramming everything into some mammoth carry-on either,” he cautions. “Send them four or five days ahead via FedEx Ground or UPS. It’s often cheaper than paying checked bag fees.”

English: a SkyWest Airlines Swearingen SA-226TC Metro II at Idaho Falls Regional Airport (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Airline food is also a favorite target of disgruntled flyers, who bemoan the quality of plane food and the price they have to pay for it. You may be nostalgic for the days when meals and pretzels were de rigueur but it makes more sense to pack your own meals and snacks, say travel experts, which will likely be more filling and nutritious than what you get in-flight anyway.

And airlines often make it difficult to use accumulated miles, piling on restrictions. Frommer’s Stewart advises using the miles for an upgrade rather than a seat, moving that $300 economy seat on a long flight to a $1,500 seat in business or first class.

Keeping your expectations in check and doing a little planning ahead of time will make travel a lot more pleasant. Start by accepting the fact you won’t be getting a meal or snacks. If you booked an economy seat, know you won’t have the legroom you want, so be ready to get up a few times and walk the aisle. Come prepared with movies and music loaded onto your iPod or tablet. And be as self sufficient as possible, knowing ahead of time that the flight attendants are actually as harried as they look—in fact for the first time since October 2010, passenger airlines have fewer full-time employees than they did the year before, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Seth Kaplan, managing partner at Airline Weekly, told National Public Radio recently that if travelers redefine their notion of “good service” as simply being travel that is safe, reliable and generally on-time at a relatively reasonable price, they would feel a lot better. The service you get from airlines today, he says, is actually “about as good historically as it’s ever been.”

According to the American Camp Association, there are more than 13,000 sleepaway camps from which to choose. Luckily, we came across a great resource.

There’s a new website called The Camp Insider,www.thecampinsider.com.

Developed by magazine editors, Lisa Siglag and Anastasia Pleasant, this well-designed site is one of the few camp resources that does not receive any fees from camps to list. Therefore, you can get a straightforward account of what the camp is all about.

The Camp Insider compares prices, how many kids and how many counselors in the bunk, health and safety features, and unique activities. We all know that almost every camp has baseball and arts and crafts, but do they have a skate park or a circus?

Our favorite feature of The Camp Insider: Demographics By the Buses.

If you want to know where the kids come from, this is the section to check out. Plus, all those questions that you may not want to ask a camp director, The Camp Insider has taken care of it for you.

Some of the questions include: Are girls allowed to wear bikinis? Is there a doctor on staff? And how is bullying handled? So, whether you want a low-key camp or one that’s high-energy, check out The Camp Insider to start your research process.

Do you want to say “my child is a rocket scientist!” and really mean it?
Or, what if your daughter grew up to build a robot that could clean your entire house?
And, how about imagining your kid stopping global warming rather than working on his tan in Boca?

Many of tomorrow’s careers will require STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and many of our kids — girls and boys — just aren’t developing a love of STEM at an early age. Science can be cool, fun and engaging!

That’s where Destination Science (www.destinationscience.org) comes in.

This terrific day camp for kids in grades K-6 is blasting off in Westchester in summer 2013. Your kids can invent a monster coaster, build an electric chameleon, and bring supplies over a broken bridge (a virtual one…not the Tappan Zee!) and have fun while they’re learning science.

StacyKnows readers who enroll their kids by February 28 will save $90/week!

So, make sure your children become the superheroes of tomorrow…and come back from camp every day this summer with smiles, inventions, and a passion for STEM!

Laughter really is the best medicine…

February 9, 8pm

Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood of Whose Line is it Anyway

Tarrytown Music Hall (Tarrytown, NY)

If you’ve ever seen an episode of Whose Line is it Anyway, you know who Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood are. If you haven’t, you have no idea what you’re missing. Quick-witted, intelligent and talented, these two men are considered tops when it comes to improvisational comedy. This weekend the two will take the stage at Tarrytown Music Hall in what promises to be a hilarious evening. The show, made up entirely on the spot, relies heavily on audience participation; sometimes by shouting out suggestions and or by joining the comedians on stage. Whatever role you play, you’re sure to have a night of side-splitting humor. For more info, visit: https://www.artswestchester.org/things-to-do/event/colin-mochrie-brad-sherwood-of-whose-line-is-it-anyway-1/

Get jazzed with PJS Jazz Society…

Sunday February 10, 5:15pm

Saxophonist Joe Lovano performs with PJS Jazz Society

First Presbyterian Church (Mount Vernon, NY)

Joe Lovano picked up a saxophone at five years old – and began a love affair that would last his entire life. The Grammy-winning musician has enjoyed a career that has spanned the world for over 40 years – He’s recorded with such jazz greats as Herbie Hancock, Carla Bley and Dave Brubeck. This month, before heading to Lincoln Center, Lovano will entertain Westchester jazz-lovers in a more intimate cabaret setting for PJS Jazz Society in Mount Vernon. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine, tune out the busy chaos of everyday life and hear a truly dynamic, gifted performer. For more info, visit: www.artswestchester.org/things-to-do/event/joe-lovano

A Roman Holiday right here in Westchester…

February 14, 7:30pm

Roman Holiday

Jacob Burns Film Center (Pleasantville, NY)

Champagne and the city of love… What could be a better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day? This year, the Jacob Burns Film Center will appeal to sweethearts and movie-lovers alike with a one-time screening of Roman Holiday, the classic romantic comedy starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. With performances that are as magical as the scenery (the film was shot on location), this is a film that was meant to be viewed on the “big screen.” But, best of all, the cozy theater provides an intimate experience that includes cappuccino, local bakery items and, for this showing only, a complimentary glass of champagne for each ticket holder. For more info, visit: www.artswestchester.org/things-to-do/event/roman-holiday
