Introducing My Victory

Lately, for some reason, whenever I see an article on how to boost body image – the article always revolves around weight loss.  Well, I have two problems with this:

Firstly – it’s not only overweight people who suffer from body image problems.

Secondly – losing weight is not the only way to boost your body image!!

So, here are a couple of practical tips to boost your body image WITHOUT losing weight:

Treat yourself with the respect and kindness you show your best friend.

Why is it so much easier to be nice to our friends?  But so hard to be nice to ourselves?  If your friend has had her hair done, or is wearing a zooty new jacket – you’ll compliment her immediately and sincerely.  But when you’re wearing something new, or sporting a new hairstyle – when you look in the mirror, you STILL notice what you see as bad traits – like your “not thin enough calves” or your “pointy nose”.  So the next time you look in the mirror – try and imagine that you’re looking at somebody else, and give them a compliment!  In the same token, when someone DOES compliment you, don’t ignore it, or shy away.  Take that compliment, and enjoy the moment – bask in it!  Chances are they really mean what they’ve just said!

Find and focus on the things you like about your looks.

Stand in from of the mirror and find things you like about yourself.  If you struggle, think of things others compliment you on.  It could be your hair colour.  It could be your skin.  It could be your voluptuous breasts, or your skinny legs!!  Remember these – and when you look in the mirror – notice them.  And feel good about them!

Dress appropriately.

As the old saying goes – “mutton dressed as lamb” is not a good look!  If you’ve been putting off buying clothes until you like your body better (and you’re already going on 3three years to get there!!) STOP!  Go and buy yourself some well-fitting clothes.  Buy items that flatter your figure, and help disguise your problems.  Properly fitting clothes encourage correct posture, and good posture makes you feel proud!  So does wearing nice clothes!

Stop negative self-talk right now.

Describing yourself negatively serves no purpose.  One trick is to use neutral objective phrases – for example – instead of saying to yourself “my tummy is really bloated and fat”, rather think “my tummy could do with a bit of work”.  So you’re not lying to yourself, but you’re not making yourself feel worse.  This way you’re also re-enforcing the importance of working out!

Be more realistic.

The world would be a very boring place if everyone was tall and skinny.  People come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.  Learn to love and cherish your body’s uniqueness.

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we checked in with Susan Blum, M.D., board-certified in Preventive Medicine, Chronic Disease Specialist and Founder of Blum Center on how her use of Functional Medicine helps the prevention of breast cancer for both primary prevention and prevention of recurrence.  The emphasis is on how the body detoxifies, or metabolizes, estrogen, which happens primarily in the liver. Research shows that how estrogen is metabolized can be one of the causes of cancer.

Dr. Blum’s  3 Helpful and Life-saving tips:

1. RID THE BODY OF ESTROGEN SAFELY: Estrogen is produced in several places in the body, including the ovaries, adrenal glands and fat cells. Even if your ovaries have been removed or you have gone through menopause, estrogen is still being produced in low but measurable amounts by these other tissues. There are multiple steps needed to help ensure safe excretion of estrogen from the body. These steps produce different end products or “metabolites” along the way. There are some metabolites that are “bad” because they are toxic and damage DNA, as opposed to the “good” estrogen metabolites that behave safely and are preferable. Although our genetics influence how easily we make the good and bad estrogens, it turns out (big surprise!) that food and other lifestyle factors have an enormous effect on the kinds of metabolites the liver will make. These are what we focus on for breast cancer prevention at BCH and Nutrition@BlumKitchen.

2. LIFESTYLE CHANGES: Genetic and urine testing can also be done to evaluate one’s risk for making bad estrogens. With these test results, we can determine how to use food, supplements and behavior modification to increase good estrogen levels and lower bad ones. For example, foods which support estrogen detoxification pathways include: cruciferous vegetables like kale, broccoli and cauliflower; fiber from fruits and vegetables; soy; dried beans; and ground flax seeds.

3. SUPPLEMENTS: Di-indolylmethane, or DIM, can be taken in supplement form to improve the good:bad estrogen ratio and decrease the risk of breast cancer. I also recommend it to reduce symptoms of too much estrogen. Research supports the use of DIM as a supplement because of its safe activity in the body and low side effect profile. DIM is poorly absorbed into the body unless it is bound to oils and fat-soluble nutrients in the same capsule.
