Back to School Tomorrow: Head Lice Shampoo Today

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

The last thing busy parents want to find in their child’s backpack is a letter from the nurse telling them that there is a head lice outbreak at school. Head lice can be a very stressful situation for parents because it is unexpected, and most Moms haven’t put thought into what to do if their kids get head lice. I recently encountered Happy Heads, which is an organic natural head lice removal system which will be perfect for the back to school season.  I had the pleasure of speaking with Melissa Gordon, a Westchester Mom and the Founder of Happyheads.
Happyheads offers parents products that are more convenient than home remedies, and safer than drugstore treatments that use pesticides. “As a Mom myself, I was upset at the differing information online about the safety of head lice treatment products. As a result, I founded Happyheads, LLC.  All of our products are paraben free, non-toxic, contain organic certified ingredients, and pure essential oils. When Moms use our kits they do not have to be concerned that the products will potentially harm their children,” said Melissa Gordon, Founder of Happyheads.

Besides the Happyheads treatment products, they also offer prevention products, which are prefect for back-to-school. Head lice cases spike during the school year when kids are sharing helmets and hats etc. The Happy School Kid Kit provides prevention products that will decrease a child’s likelihood of contracting head lice. Beyond the kits Happyheads provides how-to videos, a Q&A page on the website, and a blog that helps answer questions Moms have about head lice and how to deal with it.
Happyheads also recently launched 2 new exciting products including the Scootie- Cootie Organic Repelling shampoo & the Scootie- Cootie Organic Repelling leave in conditioner and detangler.  Both are preventative products that should especially be used during the school year when your kids are most likely to contract head  lice from their classmates.  This product is perfect for back to school and it is 100% safe for kids!

Take Shape For Life

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Of course we all want to be skinny…..and if were easy, wouldn’t we all be skinny?  Well I have the answer for you; Take Shape for Life.  This is a great program that pairs together Medifast, an easy to follow diet program and Your Own Personal Coach.  Medifast is a company that has been around for over 25 years and manufactures quality meal replacements.
So how does it work?
You eat 5 Medifast meal replacements plus one Lean and Green meal that you cook (or order at a restaurant).  Yes you can eat out and still follow the plan.  The highly nutritious meal replacements are approximately 110 calories and 11 grams of protein  each (not to mention all that nutrition).  You and your coach will design a plan that is right for you.  You choose from oatmeal, pancakes, bars, pretzels, soups, shakes, soft serve, brownies and more.  You will eat every 3 hours and won’t be hungry.
Jodi Siegel is a certified health coach with Take Shape for Life and will work with you closely through weight loss and transition.  Call for a tasting, information or to just chat  914-419-9935.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Experts say that every part of the body needs to be moisturized and protected from the sun. Good moisturizers should include water-binding agents, which attract moisture to the skin (such as glycerin, collagen, and  hyaluronic acid, just to name a few), which prevent damage caused by environmental factors, such as the sun and smog. Experts also agree that a good lotion doesn’t have to be expensive. I asked Jennifer Kandemir, laser hair removal expert of Advanced Derma Laser Tech Inc in New York City to pick her top 3 brands that cost under $20 and can be found at your local drugstore. Here is what she said….

1. Cethaphil Moisturizing Cream
“It keeps the skin moisturized and hydrated, non-greasy formula. Great for even sensitive skin types!
Cetaphil Fragrance Free Moisturizing Cream, 16-Ounce Jars (Pack of 2)
2. Olay Complete UV Protective Moisture Lotion SPF 15, $7
“Is made with antioxidants Vitamins C and E, recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation as an effective UV sunscreen”
Olay Complete All Day Moisture Lotion for Normal Skin, SPF 15, 6-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 2)
3. Aveno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion, $5
Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion, Fragrance Free, 8-Ounce Tubes (Pack of 6)
“Helps heal and protect your skin, moisturizes for over 20 hours.  Dermatologist have recommended this crème for over 60 years.”
ABOUT ADVANCED DERMA LASER TECH:
Advanced Derma Laser Tech uses two cutting-edge types of laser hair removal technology— the Cutera Nd: YAG (used primarily for African-American, Indian and Hispanic skin types) and the Alexandria by Candela Gentle Laser (used primarily for lighter skin types). The chicly decorated space boasts an elegantly clean aesthetic, producing a tranquil atmosphere that sets patients at ease from the moment they step inside. Individual treatments range from $100 to $350.  For further information, please visit www.advanceddermalaser.com.

Have You Been To O2 ?

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

o2 studio Summer is the perfect opportunity to change up your routine and get reinvigorated.  May I suggest O2 Living in the Yellow Monkey Village in Cross River?  I took a Yoga class there last week and it was fantastic.  The instructor, Jane, was enthusiastic and hands-on, helping me achieve length and balance like never before.  Although I take yoga classes on occasion, you wouldn’t call me a yogi by any stretch of the imagination.
If you feel like you need renewal and want to have a great day, go to O2 Living in the Yellow Monkey Village in Cross River, NY.
To start, go to the cafe and have one of Chef Tom’s green smoothies.
Eating lots of dark leafy greens is the best thing you can do if you want to increase your energy, cleanse your skin, lose weight, and just feel full-on sexy.
When it comes to smoothies, the sky is the limit in terms of what you can put in them, but in the case of green smoothies, it’s best to keep them simple to get the most benefits. Again: fruit; leafy greens; water.
o2 food I know they don’t sound very appetizing, but believe me, they are very good! Yes, they are! You wouldn’t even notice there are greens in the smoothie if it wasn’t for the color.  Trust me — the flavor of the greens is not noticeable. I know it sounds crazy, but just try! You’ll be happy you did.
Next, take a Yoga Class.  For me, deciding which one to take was difficult, due to the wide range of classes and instructors.  My favorite teacher Alison Aronson gives a hot vinyasa class that is a major work out with lots of schvitzing.  Or you can opt for Jane Beltz’s beginner yoga.   Jane’s hands-on approach will help you get into positions you never thought possible.
Before you leave, why not have a massage?  You know you want one.  I am a deep tissue girl.   This invigorating full body treatment involves rapid warming strokes to prepare muscles for deeper kneading and tension release. Moderate to strong pressure and a variety of innovative techniques are used to focus on specific areas of tension.
I have to say before the massage, my body ached from a poor night’s sleep.  My son is home from college.  I don’t have to tell you that I haven’t slept well since he got home.
After the massage I felt ready to take on the world again.
Next, enjoy lunch in the Live Food Cafe.  Raw food.  I always wanted to try it. Well. . .not really.
Since, it was a gorgeous day, I opted to dine alfresco. What a treat. This was the most delicious, innovative food I had tasted in a long time. Every bite of food was filled with rich, fresh flavors.  The food is organic, fresh, innovative, exciting, and delicious.
My day would have been complete except there was a product line calling my name.  Bath products, scrubs, potions, creams, all screaming my name.  Everything organic, clean and divine.  A few scrubs, exfoliates and I was out the door.
o2 products Go to O2, take a class, have a massage or a facial, try a smoothie, eat lunch, try their products.
What are you waiting for?

Cougar Myths That Drive Me Crazy

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Linda Franklin, founder of therealcougarwoman.com, and best selling author
of Don’t Ever Call Me Ma’am: The Real Cougar Woman Handbook

Cougars are getting a bum rap – but you don’t need me to tell you that. The
media is having a field day portraying women over 40 as predators with only
one thing on their minds – prowling for “Grade A” choice beef. Of course,
this cartoon characterization was undoubtedly conceived by some immature
male in the midst of a juicy, X-rated fantasy – but too many people are
buying into the hype and believing it’s true.

There are so many myths circulating about cougars, and there is nothing I
enjoy more than debunking them. Haven’t we worked too hard and busted
through too many glass ceilings to sit quietly by? In my opinion, we need to
flaunt our achievements. It’s time to show that we won’t be relegated to the
category of man-hungry, sex-starved females on the attack.

Let’s show the world who we really are and what’s important to us.

Here are my Top 5 Cougar Myths:

1. Cougars are on the prowl. That’s ridiculous. In fact, it’s the younger
men that are actually doing the chasing.  We are busy with our careers,
family and friends. Prowling simply isn’t on our agenda.

2. Cougars don’t want lasting relationships. Show me a woman who doesn’t
want to be truly loved – it’s in our genetic makeup. All of us want the
right partner to share our lives with, regardless of age.

3. Cougar are Sugar Mamas. We’ve worked hard for our money and we are not
ready to squander it on the first kid with washboard abs that asks us out We
understand the importance of being financially independent, and we want the
man in our life to have that same commitment.

4. Cougars are sex-starved cradle robbers. It’s time to let go of the Mrs.
Robinson
stereotype.  We love sex but we are very careful about who we allow
into our beds. We have the benefit of past experience and watch out for the
red warning flags that signal trouble.

5. Cougars are a passing fad. Older women and younger men have always been
attracted to each other and that’s not stopping anytime soon. But the image
of what’s right for woman is changing – and it’s about time! We are starting
to kick the old double standard right in the butt.

I invite you to add your favorites below to this list of cougar myths. We
have a very strong voice and it’s time to let the world know how fabulous we
really

are.
