Plastic bags will soon be banned at the East Hampton Farmers Market as part of a Town-wide initiative. To prepare for this change, theONswitch, a local marketing firm, has partnered with the Market to make the transition easier. theONswitch donated colorful reusable bags to the Market. The silk-like super-portable and lightweight bags, which sport the Market’s logo, will be given to customers who spend $40 or more (while supplies last), starting on Friday, August 21st. This also helps the farmers/vendors because they won’t need to bear the cost of bags immediately. The plastic bag ban goes into effect in the Town of East Hampton on September 22nd.

Says Nancy A. Shenker, CEO of theONswitch, “I’ve been shopping at the market for years and I heard some of the vendors speculating about how they were going to deal with bag ban. We need to start ‘training’ market-goers this year to bring their own bags. I figured we would goose them along with a free, fun, and colorful way to carry their groceries!”

Adds Kate Plumb, Coordinator of the East Hampton Farmers Market, “This donation will be a tremendous boost for the market as well. Shoppers can keep the branded bags in their glove boxes, trunks, bicycle baskets, or pockets. Our vendors (and the environment) will be grateful for it!”
