I Must Say Martin Short, Paul Shaffer and Glenn Close Entertained the Crowd

martin_short_1Where else but in Bedford NY  could you have a night like this??? Actor-comedian Martin Short and CBS Orchestra director  and Bedford resident Paul  Shaffer of the “Late Show with David Letterman,” teamed up for a wildly entertaining evening of comedy and song Friday night, May 8, in this year’s final installment of The Harvey School’s Harvey Presents series.

The two entertainers, best friends since 1972 when they worked together in the Toronto production of the musical ”Godspell,” delighted the packed house in Harvey’s Lasdon Theater with lively musical numbers, humorous anecdotes of their more than 40 years in show business, and funny gags and one-liners.

They invited their friend, well-known actress and singer,  who also is a Bedford Glenn Close, to come up from the audience and join them in comedy and song. Their playful rendition  of “Some Enchanted Evening” brought the house down.

Other highlights of the evening included some standup comedy bits from Short, a hilarious Jiminy Glick “Talk of the Town” segment with Harvey’s Headmaster Barry Fenstermacher, and Paul Shaffer’s virtuoso rock and roll version of the “Nutcracker Suite” on Harvey’s baby grand piano.

There was a photo op with Martin Short.  He also gave out copies of his book I Must Say.

The Martin Short and Paul Shaffer show capped an outstanding year of Harvey Presents programming for the local community with appearances this year by acclaimed sports writer Mike Lupica, the late jazz-rock trumpeter Lew Soloff of Blood, Sweat & Tears fame, and actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein.
