DIY Ultra-Hydrating Hair Mask

If you’re blessed with naturally curly hair, sometimes your locks need a little extra love. Maybe heat and humidity have made your ends go frizzy? Perhaps color treatments or frequent washing have wreaked havoc on your hair cuticle, the outermost protective layer of your hair?

We asked Rose Hyde to help us with a hydrating hair mask recipe that you can whip up at home. Rose is an ethnobotanist and co-founder of Alaffia, a remarkable company committed to empowering communities and sharing African women’s knowledge about traditional body care ingredients such as shea butter and coconut oil. Alaffia is the force behind Beautiful Curls, a fair trade shea butter curl activating system for wavy to kinky hair.

To get started, you will need:

1/2 avocado

1/4 cup Beautiful Curls Deep Conditioning Treatment

1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup

1/4 cup water

1 tablespoon Alaffia Everyday Coconut Fair Trade African Coconut Oil

1 tablespoon Alaffia Everyday Shea Fair Trade Shea Butter

Mix avocado, honey or agave, water and conditioner in a blender or food processor. Melt coconut oil and shea butter over low heat. Gradually add the oils and blend until smooth.

Apply hair mask to wet hair and comb through. Cover with a shower cap and wait 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Your hair will smell divine and feel rejuvenated.

A wise hair dresser once told me that “curls like moisture and friends.” Style wet hair with a gel or styling lotion that will hold strands together. For wavy to curly hair, consider Beautiful Curls Curl Defining Gel. For curly to kinky hair, try Beautiful Curls Curl Activating Cream. Both products have earned our Premium Body Care® seal, which means they meet our highest standards for quality, sourcing, results and safety.
