Ever take the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test? A couple of years ago, Robert Belau from Bedford Hills NY signed on as an Executive Producer for a feature documentary about Ken Kesey’s fabled road trip across America to the 1964 World’s Fair. Kesey, the famed author of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest“, was joined by The Merry Band of Pranksters, a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac’s “On the Road”. Kesey and the Pranksters intended to make a documentary about their trip, shooting footage on 16MM, but the film was never finished and the footage has remained virtually unseen. Tom Wolfe’s classic book, “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test”, was the only public record.
Directors Alison Ellwood and Alex Gibney, have painstakingly restored this footage, and have created what they hope will be both an immensely entertaining film and the definitive record of this extraordinary piece of American history.
The film, Magic Trip, will be in theaters August 5, and available on premium on-demand video July 1.
